He must have thought that life itself is a prison!
If he decides to go out there, he may not be having all the compulsory meals, cares he's having in the prison(especially in the western world)
He's sure of job security. He will learn hand work and get paid for every work he does.
Unlike in the outside world that he may be entirely imprisoned by the situation of the world : Socially, Politically, Economically and Psychologically.

The key represent freedom and the bread represent brainwashing items. Just like BMCs choose one cup garri, bottle of cooking oil, 30k, etc over their freedom from bad governance.

The bread represents our daily living. Many at times people will prefer to be slaves than to fight for their freedom, they are mentally handicaped, they are stuck with a fake reaity and are not ready to fight for the best.

From the pictures I think he can only choose either the bread or the key.
What got him to the prison in the first place was him probably trying to steal food to eat. Even if he took the key he has no hope and would still steal to eat again ending up in the prison. Hunger actually made him do this and he doesn’t understand if he has the will he could own a bread factory and do much more with the key in his hands.

This is the mentality of 90% of Nigerians...weak minds.

The prisoner(political party delegates) is accessed to the key to free himself and other prisoners(Nigerians), but prefers to go for the bread( bribe from politicians). This is how our cash and carry delegates have been behaving since time immemorial. They prefer to remain prisoners forever over a loaf of bread.
