When you look at the image below - this Bank of America in North Hollywood - you probably think nothing of it at all. It’s just a normal bank on a normal street in downtown America. And for the most part you’d be right … except 24 years ago, in 1997, it became the scene of one of the most violent bank robberies in history.

A robbery so violent that it would go on to change the very nature of policing in America.

It started at just after 9 AM on the 28th of February, 1997, when two men: Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu walked into the Bank of America, North Hollywood branch.

Mugshot photos of both men from 1993 following an arrest for speeding)

Both men were heavily armed - Philips carried a Norinco Type 56 S, Norinco Type 56 S-1, Heckler & Koch HK91, Beretta 92FS, & Mătăsăreanu a Bushmaster XM-15 E2S Dissipator, Norinco Type 56 S.

Unbeknownst to the men, they were spotted as they walked in by two police officers who radioed in: "15-A-43, requesting assistance, we have a possible 211 in progress at the Bank of America." (with 211 being the code for a bank robbery)

Inside, the pair continued with their robbery; they fired many rounds into the ceiling to scare people away from causing problems, broke their way into the tellers’ area, and forced the manager of the branch to open the vault. Expecting there to be $750,000 in the bank, the two made off with $303,305.

Outside … however … the first responders to the initial call heard the gunshots and radioed in for more back-up. Soon, more officers and detectives began arriving, blocking off strategic positions around the bank.

And at 9:24 AM, Philips exited the bank, spotted a police car not far away … and all hell broke loose.

Philips opened fire on the car, lasting several minutes (yes, several minutes), wounding 7 officers and some civilians, before retreating inside and exiting with Mătăsăreanu beside him.

Both men started to open fire on the gathered police force - with the officers firing back. Their bullets, however, couldn’t penetrate the body armour that the pair wore - plus the handguns that the officers carried just didn’t have the range or accuracy. During the shooting, some officers actually went to nearby gunshops to acquire AR-15 style assault rifles!

As the shooting continued, officers were able to injure Philips in the wrist - according to helicopter footage that showed him reacting in pain - and another round damage the gun he was holding, leaving it inoperable.

With the pair being heavily armoured & heavily armed and the responding officers having inadequate firearms, more and more officers were being hit. After the second “officer down” call was received, a tactical call was made and the SWAT team were brought in - 18 minutes after the shooting had began.

While in the parking lot, Mătăsăreanu received multiple gunshot wounds: three in his right buttock, the right leg, and again on the right arm, which caused him to abandon the dufflebag he carried with cash.

Re: (GORELOVERS) Craziests Criminal Cases , Stand Offs ..... by TheSourcerer: 1:12pm On Apr 14, 2022
He then ran to the getaway car and with Phillips on foot, the pair started exiting the parking lot.

By this time, both men were severely injured - Philips had received a further gunshot wound to his shoulder

Philips, pictured below continued to walk down the street, firing on police with his rifle until it jammed. Unable to clear it, Philips dropped the rifle, took out his handgun, placed it under his chin and fired - taking his own life. At that exact moment, Philips received a gunshot wound to his back, severing his spine.

As his body lay there motionless and devoid of life, police officers continued pumping more rounds into his corpse, before handcuffing him.

This left just Mătăsăreanu - who was still in the getaway car.

Re: (GORELOVERS) Craziests Criminal Cases , Stand Offs ..... by TheSourcerer: 1:15pm On Apr 14, 2022
The car was rendered inoperable by police fire - two of the tyres had been shot out and the windshield was covered in bulletholes. Forced to abandon the car, he then carjacked another car - but was unable to escape as the driver had engaged an electrical kill switch before fleeing - leaving Mătăsăreanu stranded.

At that moment, the SWAT team surrounded the man and a shootout of almost two and a half minutes commenced. Still unable to penetrate the man’s bullet-proof armour, the officers decided to shoot his unprotected legs, finally bringing him down and ending the whole affair.

Mătăsăreanu ultimately received 29 bullets in his legs, dying from excessive blood loss before paramedics could reach him - he swore profusely and goaded the police to kill him before succumbing to his wounds.

Re: (GORELOVERS) Craziests Criminal Cases , Stand Offs ..... by TheSourcerer: 1:16pm On Apr 14, 2022
In all, the pair had fired a total of about 1,100 rounds - approximately a round every two seconds.

Both men died at the scene and 20 additional people were wounded: 12 police and 8 civilians.

This robbery would go on to change the face of policing and spur on the materialisation of police in America - seven months afterwards, the Department of Defense gave the LAPD M16 rifles.

Almost the entirety of the shootout was captured by news helicopters and you can watch the footage below.

But be warned - it does depict Philips taking his own life

Next THE WACO STANDOFF!

For many people, Waco is a lurid story about a cult — a story that has lent itself to decades of sensationalist media coverage (and, recently, a television miniseries). It’s the story of a maniacal and apocalypse-minded cult leader, David Koresh, whose delusional stubbornness led to the deaths of 76 people. The 1993 media coverage of the Waco massacre — which depicted Koresh as a single-minded genius exerting power over his fellow Branch Davidians via mind control — has by now become the defining story of the siege. A 1993 Texas Monthly story captures this mentality well:

For 51 days federal agents camped outside the compound, paralyzed by their own ineptitude, while this notorious liar and con man was permitted to broadcast his incoherent message to the world. The authorities must have known that it was all a sham ... but Koresh had given them no choice. The feds were the hostages, the ones who were surrounded without hope. They kept assuring [the public] that they weren’t about to be drawn into a firefight, then permitted exactly that to happen. ... What happened at Mount Carmel was not suicide; it was Holy War. Just as Koresh had prophesied.
Media coverage almost uniformly referred to the Branch Davidians as a “cult” and was unsympathetic not just to Koresh but to his followers as well. A Newsweek article published during the ongoing siege, for example, uses as its closing kicker a quote from the estranged son of one Branch Davidian suggesting that the inhabitants of the Mount Carmel compound wanted to die: ”They are waiting to get zapped up to heaven where they’ll be transformed and fight a war where they get to kill all their enemies. ... The only people that may be sorry are the parents who had to let their children be released.”

The prevailing narrative, in other words, presumed that all inhabitants of the Branch Davidian community were crazy, and that therefore, any violent means used against them would be justified.

The Davidian movement was spearheaded in 1930 by a Bulgarian immigrant, Victor Houteff, who dissented from aspects of standard Seventh-Day Adventist theology. Houteff believed that the Messiah prophesied in the biblical book of Isaiah was not Jesus, but was yet to come. Houteff argued that he and his supporters would help bring about the future “Davidic kingdom” — mirroring the empire of the biblical King David — during the apocalypse. That apocalypse, he taught, was imminent.

The Branch Davidians (or Branch Davidianism) are a religious community founded in 1959 by Ben Roden. It is an offshoot of the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventist Church, established by Victor Houteff in the 1930s. Houteff was a Bulgarian immigrant to the United States and a Seventh-day Adventist. He belived himself to be the messiah , with a hundreds of videos and recordings proclaiming this .
he wrote a series of tracts entitled the "Shepherd’s Rod." The tracts called for the reform of the Seventh-day Adventist church. His ideas were rejected by Adventist leaders, and in 1935, Houteff and his followers settled near Waco and began preparing for the Second Coming. Houteff's group eventually moved to a farm near Waco, Texas. Roden took possession of the settlement, which was known as Mt. Carmel, in 1962.

The Branch Davidians are most associated with the Waco siege of 1993, a 51-day standoff between Branch Davidians and federal agents. The conflict ended when the group's compound was destroyed in a fire. Ten people were killed during the initial raid, and 76 later that week.
Howell, who acquired the position of spiritual leader from Roden, asserted it by changing his name to David Koresh, suggesting that he had ties to the biblical King David and Cyrus the Great (Koresh is the Hebrew version of the name Cyrus). He wanted to create a new lineage of world leaders.[5] This practice later served as the basis for allegations that Koresh was committing child abuse, which contributed to the siege by the ATF.

Interpreting Revelation 5:2, Koresh identified himself with the Lamb mentioned therein.[14][15] This is traditionally believed to symbolize Jesus Christ, however, Koresh suggested that the Lamb would come before Jesus and pave the way for his Second Coming.[16][5]

By the time of the 1993 Waco siege, Koresh had encouraged his followers to think of themselves as "students of the Seven Seals," rather than as "Branch Davidians." During the standoff, one of his followers publicly announced that he wanted them to thereafter be identified by the name "Koreshians".

On February 28, at 4:20 AM, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms attempted to execute a search warrant relating to alleged sexual abuse charges and illegal weapons violations.[18][19] The ATF attempted to breach the compound for approximately two hours until their ammunition ran low.[20][21] Four ATF agents (Steve Willis, Robert Williams, Todd McKeehan, and Conway Charles LeBleu) were killed and another 16 agents were wounded during the raid. The five Branch Davidians killed in the 9:45 AM raid were Winston Blake (British), Peter Gent (Australian), Peter Hipsman, Perry Jones, and Jaydean Wendell; two were killed by the Branch Davidians.[22] Almost six hours after the ceasefire, Michael Schroeder was shot dead by ATF agents who alleged he fired a pistol at agents as he attempted to re-enter the compound with Woodrow Kendrick and Norman Allison.[23] His wife claimed that he was merely returning from work and had not participated in the day's earlier altercation.[21] Schroeder had been shot once in the eye, once in the heart, and five times in the back.[24]

After the raid, ATF agents established contact with Koresh and others inside of the compound. The FBI took command after the deaths of federal agents, and managed to facilitate the release of 19 children (without their parents) relatively early into the negotiations.[25] The children were then interviewed by the FBI and the Texas Rangers.[25] Allegedly, the children had been physically and sexually abused long before the raid.[26]

FBI photo of the Mount Carmel Center engulfed in flames
On April 19, 1993, the FBI moved for a final siege of the compound using large weaponry such as .50 caliber (12.7 mm) rifles and armored Combat Engineering Vehicles (CEV) to combat the heavily armed Branch Davidians. The FBI attempted to use tear gas to flush out the Branch Davidians. Officially, FBI agents were only permitted to return any incoming fire, not to actively assault the Branch Davidians. When several Branch Davidians opened fire, the FBI's response was to increase the amount of gas being used.[23] Around noon, three fires broke out simultaneously in different parts of the building. The government maintains that the fires were deliberately started by Branch Davidians.[23][2] Some Branch Davidian survivors maintain that the fires were started either accidentally or deliberately by the assault.[21][27] Of the 85 Branch Davidians in the compound when the final siege began, 76 died on April 19 in various ways, from falling rubble to suffocating effects of the fire, or by gunshot from fellow Branch Davidians. The siege lasted 51 days.
In the late 1980s, Koresh and his followers abandoned many Branch Davidian teachings. Koresh became the group's self-proclaimed final prophet. "Koreshians" were the majority resulting from the schism among the Branch Davidians, but some of the Branch Davidians did not join Koresh's group and instead gathered around George Roden or became independent. Following a series of violent shootouts between Roden's and Koresh's group, the Mount Carmel compound was eventually taken over by the "Koreshians".

The disappearance of Lars Mittank in 2014.

On June 30, 2014, 28-year-old German, Lars Mittank travelled with friends to Bulgaria on a holiday.

During this vacation, Lars and his friends spent their week partying and going to pubs… pretty typical holiday activities.

On July 6, Lars was involved in a bar fight with other German tourists, which left him with a number of jaw injuries, and a ruptured eardrum. He was prescribed an antibiotic Cefprozil (500mg), and doctors advised him not to fly because of his ear injury.

The group were meant to return to Germany on July 7, but insisted they stay with Lars in Bulgaria until it was safe for him to fly. However, Lars refused this, and reassured that he would be fine on his own.

The rest of the group flew back to Germany as planned. One of his friends later reported that when they left Lars, he was in a “good mood” and “relaxed.”

This is where things became sketchy and creepy.

Lars checked out of the hotel that he and his friends were staying in on July 7. He then checked into another hotel that was located closer to the airport.

CCTV footage in the hotel caught Lars behaving strangely. He was pacing up and down the foyer, hiding in the elevator, constantly checking his surroundings and appeared paranoid about something or someone.

At 1am on July 8, Lars left that hotel and called his mother. He had whispered to her that four men were following him and trying to kill or rob him. He also requested that she cancel all his bank accounts and credit cards, so that he couldn’t be tracked.

His mother booked him a plane ticket back to Germany for the morning of July 8. Lars then packed all his belongings and went the Varna Airport later that morning.

Security camera footage captured him entering the airport and consulting with the airport doctor regarding his ear injury.

45 minutes later, an unknown man dressed like a construction site worker entered the medical services. Lars suddenly became anxious, mumbled something and sprinted out of the airport, leaving all of his belongings behind.

Re: (GORELOVERS) Craziests Criminal Cases , Stand Offs ..... by TheSourcerer: 1:53pm On Apr 14, 2022
The security camera caught Lars fleeing the airport in a panic. Outside, he was seen running to a nearby field where he jumped over the fence and disappeared into the forest without a trace.

Lars has never been heard from or seen since.

He has now been missing for over 6 years, and still no one knows where he is, what happened to him, or why he fled the airport in a state of panic.

This missing person case always comes to my mind when I think of eerie true crime. What makes it so bizarre is that we don’t know what caused Lars to drop all his things and vanish outside the airport. We don’t know if he was really being hunted down by four men, or why he became so paranoid in the last days of his Bulgaria trip.

All the circumstances surrounding his disappearance are just extremely sketchy, and we may never find out what happened to him.

The Hello Kitty Murder.

In May of 1999, a fourteen-year-old girl made her way to the Police station, seemingly very disturbed and scared. She told the officers that there was a ghost plaguing her, and though the police tried to brush off her claims as nonsense, they listened. They found out that the ghost was someone the girl had a hand in murdering.

Fang Man Yee; The Victim.

The fourteen-year-old girl led the police to the crime scene and the story unfolded:

Fang Man Yee was a prostitute living in Hong Kong, abandoned by her family and addicted to drugs. She was a hostess in a night club, and it was there she met Chan Man-Lok, a drug dealer that would later become one of her regulars.

Fang Man Yee was desperate for money to fuel her addiction and would steal money from clients—including an attempt to steal a wallet from Chan Man-Lok with $4000 inside of it.

As soon as he found out the cash was gone, Man-Lok enlisted help from his henchmen to find and kidnap Fang Man Yee, and force her to pay back her debt with interest. But eventually, prostituting Fang Man Yee was not enough for Man-Loc and his friends. They began torturing her extensively, beating her severely—so severely that her ribs broke, urinating on her and forcing her to drink it, and even force-feeding her a box of her own feces. All the while asking her to smile and laugh.

The torture elevated. They hung her up to the ceiling so they could hit her body with iron poles, electrocuting and burning her. One day, while they were out, the fourteen-year-old girl (the “girlfriend” of Man-Lok) came back to find her dead in the bathtub.

From there, the gang tried to discard the evidence, decapitating her and forcing her head up a Hello Kitty doll (earning the murder name: The Hello Kitty Murder) and the rest of the body was boiled—in the same stove that their food was cooking on. The rest of the body parts were discarded, fed to strays, and even given as soup to the homeless.

The story started in Denmark. It is 2012 and police officers have just made a pretty standard arrest: they found a sexual offender with possession of child porn.

Police had a much greater concern though. They needed to find who created the videos, not just who was watching them.

There were no clear clues, so they turned to the videos to see if they could find a lead.

In the background, at one point, there was the slightest shot of a pill bottle.
