Study Abroad: What Should You Bring? Packing Lists by LAAMGlobal(m): 3:42pm On Apr 16, 2022
Have you been wondering what to pack for your stay abroad? Spending a few months or probably years at a university abroad may seem intimidating. Since you will be away from home for a long period and, if you’re an international student, will probably only be able to visit home once or twice a year, it is important that you carefully prepare your packing lists. In this article, you won’t forget a thing. You probably might not need all the things on the list, so feel free to adjust it to your needs.

Things you need to take note of:
Essential documents
Prescription medications
Local currency
Face masks

Essential documents: Your essential documents are your passport and Visa approval. Make photocopies of them if you’ve not done that, be sure to keep the photocopies separate and save the originals, as it allows you to have some form of proof of your identity in situations where your passport or visa has been lost or stolen. This will enable you to apply for an emergency replacement much quicker than when you don’t have a photocopy.

Prescription medications: You should pack some medicine, especially if you need to take something on prescription. It may take a while to be in the healthcare system in your host country, so make sure you have enough.

Also, make sure you’re allowed to bring medicine into the country, contact your host country’s embassy in your home county.

Local currency: You’re advised to have around 100-200 EUR in cash for when you arrive or equivalent if euros are not the local currency.

Face masks: Remember to bring face masks, as these might be mandatory to wear in public places or shops in many countries. Bring in cotton masks which can be washed, Also disposable paper masks would work.

Electronics for study abroad:
Smartphone with charger
Notebook/Laptop with charger
Power outlets adapter in case your destination’s power outlet and voltage are different (ideally 2 or more)
Camera with case and chargerFlash Drives, USB sticks, memory card
E-reader with chargerMp3 player or iPod with charger

Other items for study abroad are:

Backpack: Something to use as your hand luggage, and daily at university. Important documents, such as your passport, student visa, travel itinerary, plane and train tickets, credit card, boarding passes, student card, health insurance card or a copy of your health insurance, doctor’s note for prescription medicine etc- all these have to be in your hand luggage.
Wallet or purse
Glasses,Sunglasses, Padlock: especially if you’re staying at a hostel
A journal to take notes
Sleeping bag, depending on where you will stay or what your travel plans are.

Clothing for study abroad:

Long-sleeved shirts or blouses
Short-sleeved shirts or blouses
Sweaters, hoodies or sweatshirt
Jeans, chinos or khaki (2 or more)
Belts
Shorts or skirts
Jackets or coats( 2 or more)
Pyjamas
Shoes(at least 2 pairs)
Flip-flops or rubber sandals (especially if you would be sharing a bathroom/shower)
Swimsuit or swim trunk
Sports clothes for working out
Socks( 2 week’s worth)
Underwear(2 week’s worth)

If you're travelling to a cold location get:
Gloves or mitten
Hat
Thermal underwear
Scarf
Woolen over-socks

Toiletries,:

When it comes to toiletries, only pack your essentials for a few days. Also, remember the rules for liquid in your cabin luggage. You can only bring liquids in 100ml containers, with no more than 10 items in a small transparent plastic bag. Anything else you should put into the suitcase that you check in. Security personnel at the airport will not argue with you if you break this rule -they will simply throw away your liquids.

Transparent plastic bag for hand luggage
Toiletries
Toothbrush
Shampoo and conditioner
Deodorants and perfume
Shower gel, soap, Shaver, razors, shaving cream
Contact lenses and contact lense liquid
Combo or hairbrush
Nail clippers
Makeup
Contraceptives
Tampons or pads
Some tissues and toilet paper
Bandage
Anti-allergy medicine
Hand sanitiser

True, but sad; Airlines sometimes lose checked luggage and if they are able to track it down, it may take a few days to receive it back. Prepare for that scenario, have a name tag on or in your luggage, this will help the airline track it down.

Don’t bring everything

Few things would take up a lot of space in your luggage but would be cheaper to buy after you have arrived in your host country. Do better research on what not to carry.
