The Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Ekiti State have sought God’s intervention over unpaid N37.8billion gratuities by the state government.

NUP Chairman in the State, Mr. Joel Akinola, who spoke during the special prayer session in Ado-Ekiti, explained that some of the members are languishing in poverty over the outstanding entitlements which he said it’s members had worked for in the last 35 years.

Akinola noted that they organized the prayer session to pray God to touch the hearts of the state government in defraying arrears of the gratuity and pensions since 2012, regretting that pensioners have died without getting their benefits, while stressing that some were battling with various difficulties due to lack of money to take care of their health challenges.
The NUP Chairman described as embarrassing that retirees had to wait endlessly for their gratuities after meritorious services to their state .

He lamented that the situation had become unbearable for his members while many had been thrown into abject poverty, urging government to consider pension matter as a priority project .

“We are crying and justifiably so in view of our agonies, our sufferings and an unprecedented assault on the psyches of our members in Ekiti State, our pride as Senior citizens who have faithfully, laboriously and dutifully served as this nation is being rubbished daily”.

He added that many of the pensioners are languishing in their homes in debilitated conditions, stressing that the entire citizenry is feeling unconcerned.
Many have been abandoned by children and families who had exhausted their financial resources on them, these abandoned Pensioners are being owed millions of naira by way of unpaid arrears of Pensions and gratuities”.

Akinola further said that part of the first stanza of the nation’s anthem says “the labour of our heroes past shall not be in vain” noting that the labour is now being made to be in vain by the failure of government and citizenry to comprehend the seriousness of their plight.

He blamed the non-compliance with constitutional provision on the part of the Ekiti state government, which he said has failed to review pensions in conformity with section 210, sub-sections 3 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal republic Nigeria that States that Pensions shall be reviewed every five years or together with State civil service salary reviews.

According to him, the statistics of the summary indebtedness as at December 2021 stands at three (3) months outstanding pensions of the State retirees , while Local Government pensioners is owed seven (7) months.
He also added that the State Pensioners are currently owed a total sum of 18 billion naira, while the Local government Pensioners outstanding gratuities stand at a whooping sum of 19.8 billion naira which he said was last paid in September 2012.

Akinola pointed out that the delay in the payment of gratuities has led to the breaking up of homes when male Pensioners could no longer meet their domestic obligations, which he said has also led to untimely deaths of retirees who could not afford to pay for their medical bills.

The senior citizens requested the State government to establish the ministry of elderly and senior citizens, noting that such will be an avenue for the Pensioners to lay bare their plight to the State government.

The only thing the Governor will understand is protest. Organising special prayer for Fayemi to pay can't work.

This is where the Labour Union should have come in and fight for them. Labour Union is dead in Nigeria.

Some state governors are evil. You pay yourself a huge sum of money as salary but refuse to pay the people who spent a better part of their lives in serving their states. Nawa o!

Many states in the SE are paying civil servants their pensions. I don't know why afonjas don't like holding their leaders accountable
