ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA DURING HIS AUDIENCE WITH TRADITIONAL AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS

THURSDAY, 21ST APRIL 2022

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this Iftar dinner, a good opportunity for me to interact directly with you as leaders of thought and opinion leaders in society.

2. As traditional and religious leaders, you command tremendous influence and respect in society. Indeed, no responsive government can afford to ignore your invaluable advice and guidance.

3. This occasion is essential for exchange of ideas and improved communication between political leaders and our revered traditional and religious leaders.

4. Nigeria is a complex country with complex challenges. So, we need the support and understanding of other leaders in society through this kind of occasional interaction to move the country forward.

5. Moving Nigeria forward is a collective responsibility. Leaders at all levels have much to contribute to make Nigeria a better place.

6. I will like to make a few references on the issue of security.

7. Today, insecurity is one of the greatest challenges facing Nigeria's existence. This administration has invested more resources than any other to tackle insecurity. We have acquired advanced equipment for our armed forces and the police to strengthen their capacity to confront terrorism and banditry. We have made adequate budgetary allocations for security.

6. Whatever the security Agencies request I make it available to them immediately. But insecurity is a world-wide phenomenon. The cure and the answer is for all sections of society to do their bit and confront the criminals head-on.

7. The success of our armed and other security forces also depends on intelligence about the activities of bandits and terrorists. It is sad to say that these murderous criminals are succeeding because they have supporters and collaborators that help them with intelligence. Those aiding and abetting terrorists are helping to destroy their own communities.

8. This situation is frustrating government's efforts to tackle this problem. Our traditional and religious leaders have a key role to play in terms of improving intelligence gathering about the movement of and activities of criminals in their domains.

9. It is very sad that villages are being wiped out by bandits with the active support of some unpatriotic elements living in their own communities. As respected leaders in our own communities, we expect you reactivate long existing methods of gathering information about social movements in your own communities.

10. When this Administration took office fully, 18 local governments were occupied and controlled by insurgent terrorists. But by determined efforts of government and cooperation of local leadership we defeated Boko Haram there. A similar effort is required now for all localities to work in full cooperation with security agents and Insha Allah we shall see the back of this problem soon.

11. Let me use this opportunity to thank you once again for honouring our invitation to be here. May Allah grant all of us the abundant rewards and blessings of this Holy month of Ramadan, Amin.

12. Thank you once again and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
