*FRACAS BETWEEN MOBILE POLICE MEN & CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS in OWERRI Imo State.*

One NSCDC Personnel allegedly shot Dead.

Men of the Squadron-18 Mobile Police, Owerri Imo State invaded the State Command premises of the Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corp(NSCDC) along Okigwe road OWERRI mid afternoon Monday 25th April, 22 requesting for the release of one of their men arrested & detained by the Civil Defence for an offence yet unknown. After their request met series of refusal to release the mobile police man in their custody. The overly enraged Mopol men went into chaos beating & heavily attacking both the men & facilities at the Corp Premise.

In the process the State Civil Defence Commandant, Mr. MO Ogar who came out to address the situation was also heavily attacked, beaten with his uniform turn & striped off him. Which led the issue to degenerate to exchange of gun battle between men of the sister Para-military agencies that resulted to the unfortunate Death of a NSCDC Personnel and lot others seriously wounded. It was learnt that the Mobile Police released their men in custody & whisked away the Commandant alongside with them.

The unfortunate situation kept the residence of City running Helter skelter for safety.

As at the time of filing this report the State PPRO, CSP Micheal Mbatam nor authorities of services is yet to officially respond to this issue.

When soldiers assaulted police in Uniform; I said it is a crime against the state.

The NSCDC have been so empowered to arrest with or without a warrant , detain , investigate and institute legal proceedings by or in the name of the Attorney-General of the Federation in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Perhaps the NSCDC should have involved the NPF in the arrest proceedings. If they feel, releasing the officer into police custody might compromise the case, then they should have been quicker to a magistrate.

If the officer arrested by NSCDC was not in line of duty or in uniform, then he shouldn’t have immunity from arrest if he has breached a law.
This aggression by the police is a crime against the state and the police officers involved should be prosecuted.
