N-Delta unemployed graduates of Egbema & Gbaramatu host communities, under the auspices of Kokodiagbene, Ogbudugbudu, Makaraba, Benikrukru, Okoyitoru and Tsekelewu (also known as KOMBOT), on Friday April 22, 2022, besieged Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Opuekeba Flowstation in Egbema Kingdom in Warri North Local Government Area, Delta State, on a peaceful protest. The protesters accused Management of the oil and gas major of torpedoing the Grievance Resolution process it started with the body to resolve the issues of the unjustified termination of Comrade Timmy Okirika and the employment of 200 Egbema and Gbaramatu graduates to fill 200 deficit employment slots for the Kingdoms.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Chevron must respect the GMoU on Egbema and Gbaramatu graduates employment #Employ 200+1EGG Now”, “Chevron must comply with the Local Content Act on Indigenous Employment #Employ 200+EGG now”, “Chevron is robbing us of employment #Employ200+1EGG now”, “Chevron must reinstate Comr. Timmy Okirika Now #EmployComradeTimmyOkirika Now”, “Chevron no employment no work #Employ200+1EGG Now”, Chevron must employ 200 Egbema/Gbaramatu graduates to fill 200 deficit employment slot from 2000-2021 #Employ200+1EGG Now”, “Chevron must respect the order of the National Assembly on the reinstatement of Comrade Timmy Okirika #ReinstatecomradeTimmyOkirika now.", Chevron must respect the order of the Federal Ministry of Labour on the reinstatement of Comrade Timmy Okirika #ReinstatecomradeTimmyOkirika now" and “Chevron fool us once, shame on you; Fool us twice, shame on us #Employ200+1EGG Now” etc.

Addressing journalists, the President of the protesting Egbema/Gbaramatu graduates, Comrade Tare Olaye decried Chevron for allegedly acting in bad faith by the abrupt and indefinite postponement of the Dispute Resolution meeting it scheduled with the body in January 2022 that prompted the body to suspend its December 6, 2021 protest. He also accused the multinational oil firm of ignoring the body’s 7-day ultimatum to reschedule a meeting with the body which led to the decision to reinstate the protest while insisting that "the ongoing protest would last until the demands are met”.

Reacting, a representative of the Policy Government and Public Affairs (PGPA) of Chevron, Alhaji Azagbe the Facility Security Officer (FSO) in Opuekeba Flowstation, while addressing the protesters on behalf of management called for caution and that discussion with Chevron Management is ongoing and promised that a meeting with the body will be scheduled within two weeks to address their grievances.

Responding, Comr. Olaye Tare, the President of KOMBOT promised that “in the event of no positive response from Chevron after two weeks, we shall escalate the protest to all Chevron operations within our region”.

This is misleading. Chevron does not pay money to Egbema. By the way, how much do you think Chevron gives to the RDC?
