U.S. drugmaker Moderna said on April 28 that it had submitted an application in the U.S. for approval of its COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months to 5 years old. This is the last age group in the United States and many other countries that cannot be vaccinated. The application must now be reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Moderna's French CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a press release:

"[Dieser Impfstoff] will be able to safely protect these children from SARS-CoV-2, which is very important in our ongoing fight against COVID-19 and will be especially popular with parents."

According to Moderna, the vaccine was 51 percent effective against symptomatic infections for infants 6 months to under 2 years old and 37 percent for children 2 to 5 years old. The dose of the vaccine for infants and young children will be reduced to 25 micrograms per injection (100 micrograms for adults). Additionally, two doses should be given.

The company said the application will be fully filed next week, noting that similar applications are "in progress" with other regulators around the world. In the U.S., Moderna's vaccine is only approved for people over the age of 18. Rival Pfizer is also said to soon submit an application to approve its vaccine for children aged 6 months to under 6 years old. However, the timeline was pushed back due to initially disappointing results, prompting the company to decide to test an initial three-dose series instead of just two.

They must keep up the tempo of declaring profits.
