Unfortunately I missed out on the Acers - due to an unhealthy dose of procastination (you know dragging my feet). Anyhow lesson learnt.

It 4 1 over heats like crazy. i even bought a coolin pad but 2 no avail. although i still use it but cos i have a warrantee dat covers any & all repairs but as soon as my warrantee is over am doin away with d laptop cos it sure do bring u more stress than fun!

1st Question. Where did you buy your acer? There have been millions around the world who have bought and still own acers  to make the machines number 2 in the world today. Maybe you need to start your investigation from where you bought it and if you REALLY have warranty from the company?? why didn't you return it and have them send you a better one? You do know that if you get a new computer that comes with manufacturers warranty and you are able to prove to them that the computer is the problem and not you trying to hack at it or something, they will send you a new one, no questions asked??

It is ok to buy used as long as you bear in mind that you are taking on the previous users problems and have to accept it is as is but when you buy new, you can confidently approach the company with problems to complain.

As soon as you notice the first couple of issues with a new computer, my advice, try every way you can to have it replaced before it gets worse.

For your 1st question: I got my acer in a COMPUSA during a July 4th sale 2006 (www.compusa.com) . then i didnt know much about laptops i was just gettin it because it was goin 4 a great deal in my own opinion plus it had a rebate on it so i got it.
When i noticed d 1st probs i did take it back 2 Compusa and i was told that since i had already filled out d rebate form online dere was really nothing dey could do about it. so d 1st promblem i encountered with it was a non-stop freezin issue. i would b in d middle of somethin important and all of a sudden it would freeze and i would need 2 restart d  laptop which was very annoyin.
Not disputin about millions or billions of people havin acer but from my own opinion personally i think dere r other better laptops than acer. even when i took it back a thrid time 2 a compusa in San Bruno after d intial Compusa i bought it was closed down besides me takin it in 3 occasions previsiouly d computer tech told me that acer actual isnt a good laptop because they r tryin 2 do away with it that is y dey have them on sale way lower than other laptops_{which definitely made sense 2 me but @ that point in time i was still a novice} but now i know better.


I opted out 4 used laptops in other 2 avoid d problems but it turned out that if i had bought d used 1 my guess is that it wont have given me so much problems like d brand new did.

Trust me i sure did take it in as soon as i noticed d 1st problems even before d store closed down. i was really pissed up because it was bearly a few days old. then i was told that it was my connection because i was using a dial-up connection instead of a dsl connection and it was also recommended that i change my internet browser from explorer to mozilla firefox which i sure did. then it turn out that i need 2 get a virus protection etc. infact all this was just with in d few months when i bought it. besides d store was doin away with d acer laptops because accordin to it was dere final stock dey were tryin 2 get rid off because i was like i don't mind exchangin it with another 1 but then 2 no avail. And also i had filled out d rebate form online which i did make mention of previously

Anyways all this is based on my personally experience with d acer laptop. recently various electronic stores don't advice customers in gettin acer if u walk into d store and ask 4 dere personal opinion.
I actually have all my receipts and paper work 2 back up my claim if you're interested i could scan them 2 u.

Acer over heats compared 2 other laptops. ( i also got a coolin pad) but dont c no improvement. I changed my internet carrier 4rm a dail-up(AOL) to a dsl (AT&T). i bought a Microsoft windows 1 care anti virus which was recommended (no improvement 2) uninstalled it and bought a norton anti virus which i currently use. same problem persists.
D most currently problem i had with it was d mozilla firefox stopped workin and explorer doesnt really work for me either so i currently use crazy browser
which a friend told me about and it sure does work better than d other browsers for now.

My finally remedy was 2 make do with Acer when i have enough money 2 purchase another 1. But till then i would have 2 deal with watever issue dat i encounter. I also would b goin 2 reboot d hard -drive when d semester ends 2 c if dere was any unknown virus dat got into d system b4 my purchase of d antivirus programs.

I remember my brother's laptop had the same problem last year, and what I did was downloaded avast from online and basically gave the computer a clean boot and started removing all the junk that had accumulated on his system. That not only freed up memory but also removed the problem he had with IE back then. If you have already tossed the old. That is fine but please next time take it back to the manufacturer. You won't believe I bought a laptop in 2003 from ebay and I was still able to send it back to HP when I had a problem with it and HP replaced the bad parts and sent it back to me free. Acer and so many other companies do the same. I am an IT person so I can do the much that compusa can for cheaper that is why I have never really been a fan of the GEEK Program at the local stores. But I am a believer in manufacturers Warranty. I would rather buy that anyday than anything else.

There is a chance that some acer models (including that specific model) have known overheating problems. I searched the web for "aspire 5000 overheat problem" and found a lot of reports which from a cursory look may indicate that your problem was not an isolated case. I havent had time to look at them in detail though to confirm that.

Per my last comment.

I looked at some of the reports and they seemed to be random in nature. As well if you search for overheating problems with other laptop models you will find a lot of reports also.

Not that this information is of any particular use in your situation - just wanted to update this thread with what I found.

Havent actually tossed it away cos i havent got d money yet 2 buy a new 1 so till then am capable of a new 1 am currently usin d Acer laptop. still dealin with d issue it does arise with. i just posted cos i believed dat dere r other better laptops than Acer out dere. and if 1 is goin 4 Acer its better 2 buy a used 1 cos a brand new would b of no use if it still ends up givin u d same problem a used 1 does. I don't know what you have done so far but I could tell you of some things I tried with mine to get it working faster. Another thing is you could get more memory for it since you said you bought it on sale 4 years ago, I am guessing the mem would be about 256 -512mb. Not sure you can upgrade but if you can clean it up. it might be some bug causing the problem you have with IE

Less than 2 years?? WOW, you should have RETURNED It as soon, What are you waiting for?? Heck, even my Acer Monitors come with 3 year warranty, anything happens to any of my 19" screens, it is going back in the box and back to maker , for them to give me a new one, I no play!!!
