Following a resolution of the Oyo State House of Assembly directing the executive arm of government to erect the statue of Chief Obafemi Awolowo on the arcade in front of the Government House, Agodi, the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has commissioned The Polytechnic, Ibadan, to produce the statue of the sage.

The state lawmakers had noted the contributions of Chief Awolowo, not only to the independence of the country, but also his unparalleled achievements in the defunct Western Region.

The speaker of the Assembly, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu and her deputy, David Olaniyan, jointly sponsored the motion that was unanimously endorsed by all the lawmakers.

The governor, according to a release by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Dr Festus Adedayo, also asked The Polytechnic to produce the statues of past leaders in the state, like the late Chief S. L. Akintola and Chief Adegoke Adelabu, also known as Penke-lemesi.

Governor Ajimobi said the decision was aimed at celebrating heroes of Yorubaland, whose imperishable footprints still dot the landscape everywhere today.

The release further said the statues would be erected in the arcade after their production, adding that the arcade would be renamed as Heroes' Square.

Meanwhile, the state government has denied media report to the effect that it claims sole ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.

This was made known in a release signed by Dr Adedayo.

According to him, the report was a figment of the imagination of the reporter, as the Oyo and Osun state governments were pursuing a brotherly joint ownership of the school.

The release said the slashing of school fees in Oyo State, as announced by the state government on Monday, could not totally apply to LAUTECH, because this could only be done in conjunction with the Osun State government, which had a joint proprietorship with Oyo State over the institution.

The release cautioned media professionals to "delineate the boundary between the truth and falsehood" in their reportage of events.

I really believe that Ibadan ought to have the statue of all Western heroes, including Chief Enahoro and Okoti-Eboh. As well Madam Tinubu and Mrs Kuti.

Was he voted to do something better for the state or order statues?
Re: Ajimobi Orders Awo Statue by ektbear: 6:09pm On Jul 14, 2011
It isn't 100% necessary to do this, but using that as the criterion, then government shouldn't spend any money supporting art, music, sports, etc.

File it under "cultural heritage" or whatever.

This same Ajumobi that has castigated Akala for draining the state pulse. Now, where has this money come from?. He is also finding it uneasy to pay workers the required minimum wage. This Governor is not serious at all. Anyway, politicians are not the only ones to be honoured, there are other men that excelled in that state or Yorubaland in different fields. Monuments or anything can be built for their evergreen memories.
In sports, Muda Lawal, Felix Owolabi, Segun Odegbami, Best Ogedengbe, Mutiu Adepoju, Dimeji Lawal, Chris Nwosu, Bella Momo etc. They deserve their own statutes.
In music, Sunny Ade, E. Obey, Orland Owoh, Kollington Ayinla etc.
Hubert Ogunde, Baba Sala (Olaiya) etc in arts are not yet honoured.
