A northern group, Arewa Transformational Leaders, has kicked against zoning of presidential tickets by major political parties to any region.

National Chairman of the group, Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim, told journalists at the end of their meeting in Abuja, that the loud conversation for zoning of the presidency in 2023 should not be at the centre of conversation.

Meanwhile, as the debate on zoning of the 2023 presidency rages, human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani has declared that northern politicians were not ready to cede power to the south.

He said politicians cannot continue to accept the principle of federal character and at the same time kick against zoning.

“APC is playing cat and mouse game with PDP. If the opposition fields a northern candidate, APC will field a northerner. This is because of the belief that the poorest of the poor in the north vote according the dictates of their leaders. That is the sentiment. The unity in the north is not in the south. The North-East, North-West and North-Central will vote for a northern candidate, but it is not so in the south. APC is afraid of zoning their ticket to the south because if they do so, and a northerner emerges PDP flag bearer, the ruling party may lose the presidential election,” Sani said.

He said if the opposition party was really desirous of taking over power, it should avoid internal bickering and unite as a force, take advantage of the appalling situation in the country to articulate its points. “For PDP, whoever emerges, after the presidential primary, the party has a duty to rally round him to rescue this country.”

It is very clear that the North only vote based on ethnicity. Yet, it baffles me how people accuse the South East the most of tribalism.

A thunderous clap for you. The Nigerian firstborn indeed.
@Mr Sani, you are 1000℅ correct.
When it comes to Nigerian politics, the north knows it better. When it favors them, they agree but if it doesn't you will see them play a mind game, and in the end, they will stand against it. They allowed the myopic southern politicians to make them chairmen of both political parties (PDP APC) and now see how they are behaving in regards to the presidency.

How many of the northern presidential aspirants have you seen come to the south for campaign abi the south no matter?

it’s a disease in Nigeria clamoring but what baffles me is the fact that he believes no zoning to other zones because they hold the most power but is he wrong?

Most people in the North vote for ‘na our brother’ ...due to the religion they share
... unfortunately, they suffer from their administration the most.

There are only few enlightened northerners who leave tribalism aside while making decisions.

The north has gotten Nigeria forever and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

The only way to break the North's stranglehold on Nigeria is "southern unity". But unfortunately southern unity had been murdered by Southerners themselves.

The first mistake was the Southerners' failure to rally round a southern president in 2015 to complete two terms, but Southerners foolishly ganged up with the north to "KILL" a southern president in 2015. As terrible as Buhari is, the north still supported him for a second term in 2019.

Second mistake is Southerners in 2022 clamoring for Igbo presidency and Yoruba presidency at the same time instead of unity behind the unfairly maginalised SE.

The result now is that both the APC and PDP will now field northerners and the south will be left to fight for VP slots for the next 8 years. And after 8 years, the south will still repeat same mistake in 2031.

The south never learns.

As truly you speak. But do you think there might be hidden forces behind this?

Yen yen yen! All of you always shout they know it better, why didn't Buhari win on three attempts not until he garnered progressive southern support 2015, and why did Jonathan defeated him in 2011? The north are only good with such scheme because they have held the central government for too long, hence created fake advantages , even at that they are scared of southern leadership after Buhari's 8yrs.

What they are cooking this time around will burn them, because the world have moved on pass their type unity.

Don't blame the North, all blame goes to the greedy scratch-faced people who want to take the right of others in the South.

The saying that he who must come to equity must come with clean hands is alien to them!

I support the North to contest and for them to continue ruling than for it to go to the greedy SW.

If these greedy people had supported Igbos unanimously instead of stupidly campaigning for a criminal who pee and poo on himself just because of tribalism, the North wouldn't have contemplated on succeeding themselves in power!

It's hypocrisy of the most disgusting form to ask Northerners not to contest yet those that have ruled as much as them are desperately trying to take over. You think Northerners are fools??!!

Mr Sanni, there's no price in saying the obvious truth.
Again, no matter who APC fields, the party must surely go with their messiah when he quits next year. Nigerians have never had it this bad.
