Russia accused of making 'food a weapon' by UK following pleas for Putin to reopen ports

Russia is "making food a weapon" in the war in Ukraine, the UK's foreign office has said, following calls for Vladimir Putin to reopen ports in the country.

"Countries around the world are suffering as a result," it added. The allegation comes after the US accused Russia of "weaponising" food and holding grain, for millions of people around the world, "hostage". Yesterday, the UN pleaded for Moscow to reopen key Ukrainian Black Sea ports to allow for the transport of food supplies.

Head of the UN World Food Programme, David Beasley said: "I ask President Putin, if you have any heart at all, to please open these ports... so that we can feed the poorest of the poor and avert famine".
Russia replied by saying that the removal of sanctions will have to be considered in order for it to open its access to the ports.

Ukraine is one of the world's biggest grain producers and used to export most of its goods through its seaports prior to the war.
