Following a violent demonstration in Ikere town on May 9 this year, the Ekiti State government has sacked the executive of the Students’ Union Government of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, just as the school has been directed to reopen.

This is coming on the heels of an announcement by the college authorities that the school, which had been closed since May 9 over the violent protest, would reopen for normal academic activities tomorrow, Monday July 18 and “commence first semester examinations immediately.”

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the college, Mr. Tokunbo Olakunle, the dissolution of the students’ union executive was because of “the failure of the student union executive to follow laid down procedure in calling a congress and embarking on a demonstration as contained in the student union constitution.”

The statement added that “all members of staff of the college who have been mentioned to be involved in the disruption of the academic programmes will be made to face appropriate disciplinary action.”
