PDP Primary Election: Why I Stepped Down For Atiku Abubakar - Tambuwal (Video)

Sokoto state governor and presidential aspirant during the People's Democratic Party (PDP) primary election, Aminu Tambuwal has stated why he stepped down for Atiku Abubakar during the presidential primary election that was held on Saturday, IGBERETV reports.

Tambuwal's stepping down made it possible for Atiku Abubakar to win the PDP Presidential ticket against Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike who came second in the election.

According to Tambuwal, after considering the demographic aspect of Nigeria's elections he had to step down in order to ensure that PDP wins Nigeria's 2023 Presidential election.

Tambuwal said this during a meeting with PDP leaders.

Below is a part of the conversation.

"Tambuwal: For PDP, I have a question. And all of us here are PDP. Are we looking for zoning or winning?

Audience: winning

Tambuwal: No, I didn't hear you

Audience: Winning (louder)

Tambuwal: We want to win the election?

Audience: Yes

Tambuwal: Now, with due respect, what I am going to say, I don't mean any offence.

I see my leader, Olisa Metuh coming. I am going to use your state as a reference point (he points at Metuh). And with due respect, the people of the Plateau, I will use your state as another reference point (he points at the audience).

We had an election in Anambra State. The governor of Anambra State won the election 112,000 votes. The person next to him - the PDP candidate secured about 53,000 votes. The third - the APC candidate had 24,000 votes. The fourth - YPP candidate had about 20,000 votes. Put together, in that state election (governorship), we had about 220,000 votes in between four political parties.

Jos Bassa Federal Constituency, Plateau State, where PDP won, the PDP candidate had about 40,000 votes. PRP had 37,000 votes, then APC had 26,000 votes. If you add this, it is close to 100,000 votes (Federal Constituency Election).

So, demography is an issue. That was why after the election, I appealed to PDP to look at these elections and be studying elections and bye-elections as to progress towards 2023.

APC took their ticket to Katsina in 2015 where the last president of PDP, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua died in office in 2010. Five years later, APC, out of strategic thinking , with Bola Tinubu and the rest of them. I was part of it. We said we are looking for how to win. We must get power before we share it. And deliberately, we took APC ticket to Katsina and gave it to Muhammadu Buhari. Yes, Atiku Abubakar contested, Musa Yar'Adua contested, Sam, Rochas Okorocha. But we all knew where we were going. Because we were determined to win.

And let me tell you, had APC given that ticket to somebody from South. In particular, South-South , we couldn't have won.

Go and check the election result of 2007. In 2003, President Buhari had 11 million votes but in 2007, he had 7 million votes against Yar'Adua because they are from the same Katsina. And he couldn't win him (Yar'Adua).

Now, this is for PDP. In the South as at today, PDP is in 8 government houses. APC is also in 8 government houses, leaving 1, that is Anambra.

In the North, APC is in 14 government houses. PDP is in 5 government houses. And they have the President.

I have given you this analysis, so that together as leaders of our party who are working towards winning election. Not zoning, not winning ticket. Yes, you can share ticket because you can tear it and everybody can take his piece and go to his zone. But you must plan to win election. That is the reality of it. It is not anybody's making."

But if the South gave atiku/PDP the highest votes again next year, then the north, especially PDP will forever take them as slaves.
The east must not give atiku 50k votes, and SS must not give them 50k too.
North feels only them can win elections in Nigeria. PDP is very funny, although I don't trust eastern voters anyway, but vote obi if you don't want apc.. Voting atiku makes you a perpetual looser, of course a slave after 24 years of laboring for them.. Be wise

I am very confident that Peter Obi is not winning this election...... PDP or APC structure is too strong to be defeated by labour party..

No matter the grammar Tambuwal speaks, he should pray Wike doesn't pay him and the Southern governors in their own coin.

Like Wike, betrayal is not in my blood. But if Wike decides to direct his support to another party or candidate, I will follow.

Wike is simply naive about politics in federal level. His hold is solely on zoning believing all southern governors will be by him when he has never been on their side for once.

Now tambuwal decided to use demography as a tool to keep power in the north and trust me APC will definitely do the same.

For SE to win presidential election, there most be a total hands-off from the north in agreement with zoning else the circle continues

Whether or not you bunch like it, the north will always dominate when it comes to politics. Democracy is based on population.. No sane party leader that thinks strategically will choose their candidate from a southern region as they already know where the voting strength lies.

They don't care about who's more qualified. All they want is to take over power with whoever that can make them win for their pecuniary gains - just like Tambuwal cited.


They have the crowd there and cooperating couple with the fact we southerners are always at loggerhead with each other. So, getting a southern presidency from the way it is right now, will always seem to be far-fetched. The cheating is too much.

Dividing the country or restructuring is the only solution to this calamity that has befell us..

The same Tambuwal shouldn’t forget obj and Goodluck won against northern candidates. APC do not need to give a northerner their ticket, because it’s now easy for them to win with any of osibanjo or Tinubu. Failure to keep Kwankwaso and Peter obi should make the job extremely easy for APC, they are all hungry for power. When APC took power from PDP, so many people wanted to become president, tinubu wanted to be buhari vice but they knew it was going to take a lot of sacrifices to achieve that and they did.

Kwankwaso won't stand being defeated by a southern candidate, and he is not problem to Atiku.

You would see how Kwankwaso,would be diluted in Atiku's government.
