The Okada Ban is a Bad Idea

Employment

Nigeria has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the world. Figures range from 40% to 55% depending on source. The okada(motor bike) has become a source of income and employment for thousands of young and old people and by extension hundreds of thousands of families. An outright ban of Okadas immediately throws into the poverty thousands of Nigeriens and by extension their families.

Infrastructure

Many communities in Nigeria have poor rood networks and infrastructure making them not motorable. This communities have managed to bridge this problems by the use of okada that are able to access route cars can not. Banning okada will make life difficult for people going to work or school or their various businesses.

Crime

Forcing thousands into unemployment will inevitably force some of the individuals into crime to survive. Thereby exacerbating an already sky high crime level.

High handedness

The decision to ban okadas on account of a few bad eggs is a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water. Using that logic over 60% of Nigerian and cars would be banned as they are involved in worse driving and crimes (kidnapping, one chance operater, ritual killers, armed robbers etc)

Missed opportunities

The okada community are a great potential source of employment, empowerment, investment opportunities for business men/women and increased tax revenue to government coffers

No proper social welfare

Nigeria's lack of proper social welfare means there's nothing for the riders and their families to fall back on.

Low income individuals and families

The okada is an affordable source of transportation for millions of low income individuals and families who can't afford taxis. Taking this away puts them into difficulties.

What the government should have done

The government should instead have brought in policies to better regulate bike riders. Arrange training centers to ensure driving awareness, proper licensing, a data base base of operators, to weed out bad eggs and reward those that comply. Instead of show politicking in an attempt to show that they are working they should instead plan better ways to help the lives of our fellow Nigerians.

The Okada ban is a very good idea because of the riders are criminals who don't have regard for human life.

They should go back to their villages instead of constituting nuansabce in a city like Lagos.

What of after another incident, the okada riders proceed to burn several houses in an estate or location just like it happened recently in Abuja?

Those who are ready to abide by the state laws have been told where they are able to operate after proper documentation.

The okada ban is the fall out of an Intel that dangerous northerners have surrounded the SW.

Every state have ban bike and Lagos is not alone. Even the Keke need some restrictions because they too have their own. Imagine people who have not mentally sound to be in the city but found themselves in the city all in the name of driving Keke.

I support the ban and the ban should stay.
