US To Send High Mobility Advanced Rocket Systems HIMARS To Ukraine, Biden Says by Igbofam2: 4:06pm On Jun 01, 2022
Published On 1 Jun 2022

US official says weapons being sent are HIMARS, which have a longer range than those currently deployed by Ukraine.

The Biden administration says it will send Ukraine a small number of high-tech, medium-range rocket systems, a critical weapon that Ukrainian leaders have been begging for as they struggle to stall Russian progress in the Donbas region.

The rocket systems are part of a new $700m tranche of security assistance for Ukraine from the United States that will include helicopters, Javelin antitank weapon systems, tactical vehicles, spare parts and more, two senior administration officials said on Tuesday. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the weapons package that will be formally unveiled on Wednesday.

The US decision to provide the advanced rocket systems tries to strike a balance between the desire to help Ukraine battle ferocious Russian artillery barrages while not providing arms that could allow Ukraine to hit targets deep inside Russia and trigger an escalation in the war.

In a guest essay published on Tuesday evening in The New York Times, President Joe Biden confirmed that he has decided to “provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine”.

Biden had said on Monday that the US would not send Ukraine “rocket systems that can strike into Russia”.

Any weapons system can shoot into Russia if it is close enough to the border. The aid package expected to be unveiled on Wednesday would send what the US considers medium-range rockets – they generally can travel about 70km (45 miles), the officials said.

Russia accuses US of ‘pouring oil on the fire’
Russia on Wednesday sharply criticised the US decision to supply the rocket systems and munitions to Ukraine, with the Kremlin accusing the United States on Wednesday of adding “fuel to the fire”.

“We believe that the US is deliberately pouring oil on the fire. The US is obviously holding the line that it will fight Russia to the last Ukrainian,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Earlier Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told state news agency RIA Novosti that Moscow viewed US military aid to Ukraine “extremely negatively”.

Ryabkov, when asked about the prospect of a direct confrontation between the US and Russia, said: “Any arms shipments that continue, that are on the rise, increase the risks of such a development.”

He blamed Washington for escalating hostilities in Ukraine, saying: “The US does nothing in the interests of finding some kind of solution. It was precisely the same for many years before the beginning of the special military operation.”

The Ukrainians have assured US officials that they will not fire rockets into Russian territory, according to the senior administration officials. One official noted that the advanced rocket systems will give Ukrainian forces greater precision in targeting Russian assets inside Ukraine.

The expectation is that Ukraine could use the rockets in the eastern Donbas region, where they could both intercept Russian artillery and take out Russian positions in towns where fighting is intense, such as Severodonetsk.

Severodonetsk is important to Russian efforts to capture the Donbas before more Western arms arrive to bolster Ukraine’s defence. The city, which is 145km (90 miles) south of the Russian border, is in an area that is the last pocket under Ukrainian government control in the Luhansk region of the Donbas.

Biden in his New York Times essay added: “We are not encouraging or enabling Ukraine to attack beyond its borders. We do not want to prolong the war just to inflict pain on Russia.”

It is the 11th package approved so far and will be the first to tap the $40bn in security and economic assistance recently passed by Congress. The rocket systems would be part of Pentagon drawdown authority, involving taking weapons from US inventory and getting them into Ukraine quickly. Ukrainian troops would also need training on the new systems, which could take at least a week or two.

Officials said the plan is to send Ukraine the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which is mounted on a truck and can carry a container with six rockets. The system can launch a medium-range rocket, which is the current plan, but is also capable of firing a longer-range missile, the Army Tactical Missile System, which has a range of about 300km (190 miles) and is not part of the plan.

Since the war began in February, the US and its allies have tried to walk a narrow line: send Ukraine weapons needed to fight off Russia, but stop short of providing aid that will inflame Russian President Vladimir Putin and trigger a broader conflict that could spill over into other parts of Europe.

Over time, however, the US and allies have amped up the weaponry going into Ukraine, as the fight has shifted from Russia’s broader campaign to take the capital, Kyiv, and other areas, to more close-contact skirmishes for small pieces of land in the east and south.

To that end, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pleading with the West to send multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine as soon as possible to help stop Russia’s destruction of towns in the Donbas.

Ever since this announcement was made by the Biden administration the Russians have been on a lamentation spree and this is why....

The US has two multiple launch rocket systems:

M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS

Both have a crew of three, both fire the same missiles, both do not need a Fire Direction Center to compute their missions.

The M142 HIMARS exists in only one version. No updates so far - this version is called M142A0.

The M270 MLRS exists in three versions:
• M270A0
• M270A1
• M270A2.

As for the M142: more than 540 have been produced so far and the US Army and Marine inventory is around 450 systems, with approximately 335 in active units.

In short: the US could donate a lot of either system to Ukraine.

The main main limitation for the M142 is that it carries only one missile pod. As pods contain the same 6x missiles (either 6x M30A1, 6x M31, or 6x M31A1) this somewhat limits a artillery commander's options... unless he has two M142 loaded with different missiles.

The M270A1 carries two pods and so can fire unitary warheads (M31/M31A1) and alternative warhead (M30A1) rockets in the same fire mission.

The M142 systems can fire a LOT more missions per hour than russian systems.

M142 reload time: 5 minutes.

The Russia version has to measure and set up their firing positions, plot a fire mission with their outdated maps, sight their launchers optically, this and their slow reloading time mean that the russians can fire one volley per hour at best...

The M142 needs only 1 minute to stop, set up and fire their missiles:

drone spots a russian target - sends GPS coordinates to the M142 - gunner enters GPS coordinates into the UFCS - launches missiles - moves on.

An M142 can fire 5-6 volleys per hour!

Not only are M142 systems faster to reload, quicker to fire, and massively more accurate than russian rocket launchers - their missiles also fly further than russian missiles.

Officially HIMARS missiles have a range of 70 km... That is the range the US wants the public to believe but I can tell you that this is not the true range. It travels much further.

The russians are about to make painful discoveries soon regarding the HIMARS system.

Russia is ready to strike at the United States, - Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

“If America decides to transfer weapons capable of reaching targets in Russia to Ukraine, the country will be forced to strike in order to prevent the delivery.”

“Any transfer of weapons to Kiev increases the risk of a direct clash between the Russian Federation and the United States”, Ryabkov stressed.

It’s worth noting that Russia has never used that language in the past**. Russia always spoke of retaliatory strikes if Russian territory is attacked — never initiating strikes. So that’s new

Pro-Russian fighters of the Luhansk People's Republic loaded up a battery of howitzers and reportedly fire missiles at a Ukrainian base.

The People's Militia of the so-called LPR says it took journalists to the front line outside the village of Borovsky to film the strike against Ukrainian resistance fighters.

The pro-Russia unit claimed they destroyed an entire fortified area consisting of concentrated manpower and military equipment.

The militia said they used mortars and tank fire to destroy the Ukrainian base after first giving the enemy the option to withdraw or surrender.

One LPR fighter told reporters: "The situation has changed a lot. The enemy is not so active anymore. Now, our artillery and tank units are working very well together."

Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what the Kremlin is still calling a "special military operation." June 1 marks the 98th day of the campaign.

From February 24 to June 1, the total combat losses of Russian troops stand at around 30,700 personnel, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military also claims that Russia has lost 1,361 tanks, 3,343 armored fighting vehicles, 659 artillery systems, 207 multiple launch rocket systems, 94 anti-aircraft systems, 208 warplanes, 175 helicopters, 2,290 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, 13 vessels, 519 unmanned aerial vehicles, 49 units of special equipment, and 120 cruise missiles.

In recent news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Russian strikes on a nitric acid tank in the besieged eastern city of Sievierodonetsk "madness."

Residents of Sievierodonetsk have been warned to remain in bomb shelters and to prepare masks to protect themselves against toxic fumes.

Analysts say up to 70 percent of the embattled city is now controlled by Russian forces, with almost all critical infrastructure and housing destroyed.

Despite setbacks in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian troops have made advances in Kherson in the south and around Kharkiv in the northeast.

President Joe Biden said he will send Kyiv more advanced U.S. rocket systems that will help to strike enemy forces from a longer distance.

The armaments include the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), according to White House sources, which can launch multiple missiles precision-guided to strike as far away as 45 miles, which is much further than Ukraine's current panoply. The system is believed to be more accurate than Russian equivalents.

Kremlin sources say that NATO and the U.S. are thereby adding fuel to the fire in the conflict in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, European Union leaders reached an agreement to ban 90 percent of oil imports from Russia, but they remain undecided on natural gas imports.

The governor of Luhansk says Russia has captured most of Severodonetsk, the last city remaining to complete the capture of Luhansk, one of the two regions in the Donbas that Russia is helping to liberate from Ukraine. Kadyrov, the president of the Chenchen autonomous region of Russia confirmed this too saying 60-80% of the city is already in Russian hands.

After this capture, Russia will concentrate its forces on Donetsk, the other region in Donbas, and end the war, unless other regions in Ukraine request to be liberated from the Nazis in Ukraine, or Russia decides to harass Zelensky and chase him into his bunker once again.
