Fiber cement board, an innovative building material, is now manufactured in Nigeria by the new material Nigeria limited, a company that is part of the Sinoma/CNBM group, a 500 company with headquarters in Beijing, China.
Mr Jackie Dai Hui, the company’s Managing Director, told journalists during the new product news briefing that New Material Nigeria Limited recently opened its factory in the Kuje area of Abuja, its first outside of China, and is already producing fibre cement boards of global standards.

Hui, when asked about the cost advantages of using fiber cement boards, stated that it saves material and labor costs and reduces project delivery time.

“You save money. For example, this building may take one or two years to complete, but by using our fiber cement board for partitions, you can finish it in three months. You save human resources, cement, and blocks, and most importantly, you protect the environment. “It’s green, and it’s better than block,” he said.

While showing journalists around the factory, he noted that the premises had the most up-to-date industrial safety measures and had passed fire safety tests conducted by the federal fire service. The factory employs 119 Nigerians at various levels and has an installed production capacity of 5 million square meters of fibre cement boards per year. Dai Hui stated

“Yes, we do source locally.” That is why we are confident in our ability to expand and remain in Nigeria. For example, we were able to locate a Kano source for one of our materials, paper pulp, last month. We use Lafarge, Dangote, and Bua cement. The rest are quartz sand and stones that we get locally.”

Nigeria’s housing sector is at least 20 million units short, and experts have proposed several cost-effective solutions to close the gap. Local demand for fiber cement boards in Nigeria has increased due to a greater emphasis on strength, sound, and fireproofing qualities.

This demand is met by the $50 million New Material Nigeria factory. However, Dai Hui stated that this is only the beginning, as another factory is scheduled to open in Lagos in the near future.

Dai Hui expressed a desire to be a part of Nigeria’s export-oriented industrial development and stated that the company plans to use Nigeria as a manufacturing hub for the export of fiber cement boards to the entire West African region.

“With the support of the Nigerian people, we can expand and make Nigeria an exportation hub for the entire ECOWAS,” he said.
