Who says online polls are not useful

Leading up to the 2015 presidential elections, two separate online polls conducted by Sahara Reporters and Reno Omokri suggested that Muhammadu Buhari was poised to win.

See the report below:

Sani Tukur
October 18, 2014

On October 15, 2014 the day former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, declared his intention to run for president in the 2015 election, news website, Sahara Reporters, activated an opinion poll asking Nigerians to indicate who they would vote for if the election were to hold that day between Mr. Buhari (as candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC) and President Goodluck Jonathan ( as candidate of the Peoples Democratic, PDP).

The poll lasted for only 24 hours, and out of a total of 15,435 persons that voted, Mr. Buhari got 12,246 votes, representing 79 percent of the total votes cast, while President Jonathan got 3189 votes, representing 21 percent of the total votes.

However, ostensibly to counter the survey conducted by Sahara Reporters, Mr. Jonathan’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Reno Omokri, also set up a similar poll asking almost the same question posed by the news website.

His poll, which is still running on his blog, “Build Up Nigeria” posed the question: “If the Nigerian Presidential election were held today, who would you vote for between President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari?”.

Mr. Omokri’s poll began a day after Mr. Buhari declared to run, but unlike the one ran by Sahara Reporters, which has since closed, the one by Build Up Nigeria is still running.

However, the result of the poll, as at 18:32 p.m. on Saturday, showed that Mr. Buhari was also leading by a wide margin.

While Mr. Buhari has 6,411 votes, representing 69.87 percent of the total tally, President Goodluck Jonathan has 2,455 votes, representing 26.75 percent of the votes cast.

Three hundred and ten persons, representing 3.38 percent of the total votes, were undecided.

Online polls may not guarantee victory at the polls but it is a strong indicator of what to expect.

Therefore, the outcome of the polls conducted so far leading to the 2023 elections should encourage those whose candidates are leading and worry those whose candidates are lagging.

Online polls are totally worthless for determining general public opinion about something because they exclude people who don’t..can’t or won’t use the internet...As internet usage goes down progressively through the age groups from younger to older..an online poll disproportionally represents the young and almost completely fails to represent the over 70s... undecided

Only Yoruba moslems claim it doesn't work because their thief is losing in all the polls.

If Tinubu manages to win one, even a rigged poll, we will not hear word again.

True, online polls captures mostly the opinions of the youths but the youths belong to a family consisting also of the elderly.

In other words, many of the opinions expressed online are largely representative of that of the family.

Stop talking nonsense.. grin
What happened to everyone having different opinion and candidate?

Your father's candidate might be different from yours..same as his opinion..
Or is it a normalcy in Nigeria for the kids to always act like their parent? grin

Dissenting opinions within the family is possible but most families think alike

Nobody is forcing any opinion here. I'm saying it is common for most families to think alike

And that doesn't determine the election results..
