Selling of land or property is one of the most lucrative businesses in Lagos and unfortunately you will find a lot of people ready to scam you of your hard earned money and then even frustrate you into settling out of court.

Learn from experience of other and don’t fall victim. These crooks will sweet talk you into buying anything but once you have armed yourself with this few tips, then you can be rest assured that any land or property that you want to buy in Lagos is guaranteed.


First, know the source of the land. Most lands popularly comes with a survey document. And this document comes with the name of the registered owner of that portion of land. When you request this from your potential buyer, all you need to do is to either go to the surveyor general’s office to confirm or send to a known surveyor to check;

- If the survey plan is genuinely registered with the government and;
- If the property is free from government acquisition

Run from government acquired land, you can’t win in most case except through ratification or government gazette.

Secondly, Some land sellers will present you with a Certificate of Occupancy commonly know as C of O. This document would contain the name of the owner of the land and when you see this in most cases, it should suggest that such land is genuine and land is free from any form of government acquisition. But most scamming land sellers create fake C of O to trick buyers into coughing out their hard earned money without much resistance.

You can always confirm this document by taking the number on the document to the Lands Bureau office in Alausa.

So, before you buy any land in Lagos, request for the survey and investigate. And if you are provided with a C of O do the same.

Please note, these two documents doesn’t solve the issue of land owners selling to one or more persons using the same documents.
