Elephant Kills Indian Woman And Returns To Her Funeral To Attack Her Corpse by Highesschief1: 11:25pm On Jun 19, 2022
An elephant that killed a woman in India returned to her funeral and trampled on her corpse, local police have said.

The 70-year-old woman, Maya Murmu, was attacked by the wild elephant as she walked to collect water in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, Indian news outlet The Print reported.

The elephant had strayed from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies about 10 miles from the city of Jamshedpur.

After the elephant attacked Murmu, she was rushed to hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries, Lopamudra Nayak, an inspector at the Rasgovindpur police station, told The Print.

Later, as family members gathered to perform a funeral for Murmu, the wild tusker appeared once again.

It approached the pyre and grabbed the body, The Print reported. The elephant then trampled on her body again, and threw it away before fleeing.

The funeral was completed a few hours later.

Duncan McNair, a lawyer and founder of conservation charity Save The Asian Elephants, told Newsweek that this incident is a reminder that although gentle creatures, elephants can be "dangerous and deadly."

However, McNair said these incidents rarely happen without the elephant having been provoked in someway. "These endangered elephants can be deadly dangerous, particularly when provoked or abused," he said.

He said that Asian elephants are particularly subject to "torture and stabbing" for easy use in the tourism industry.

"Elephants are generally benign, and passive ... they don't rush out of nowhere to attack people that pose no threat to their safety, or babies or to anything like that," he said. "[This incident] is surprising because it shows no provocation of the elephant..."

McNair said the elephant coming back and handling the body during the body, could be down to their "extraordinary cognitive abilities."

"It's just possible that if [the elephant] was in proximity still at the time of the funeral, and that's not clear, that it will have recognised the remains. And it may have seen or smelled that and it may have associated that woman with some catastrophe to it or it's herd. That is quite possible," he said.

Conflict on the Rise
Human and elephant conflict is on the rise across the world because the loss of the animals' natural habitat is forcing elephants into closer proximity with residential areas.

Climate change is also making life harder for elephants. As the temperature increases, water sources are more likely to dry up, causing elephants to hunt out new resources, and this can cause them to come into contact with humans. Odisha's Mayurbhanj district has suffered severe droughts in recent years.

Fragmented habitats can cause "crop raiding" instances, when elephants stray onto farmlands in search of food and water, ruining growing crops as they do so.

In May, an Indian farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant. The elephant and its herd had wandered onto farmlands.

The herd of 11 elephants strayed into the field near a village in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district during the night. The man who was attacked had been guarding the field, The Hindu Times reported.

The farmer died instantly after being trampled, the news outlet said.

While they are known for being gentle giants, elephants can attack humans when they feel vulnerable, or if their territory is being threatened.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), these kinds of instances can cause elephants to be seen as a nuisance. In one 2001 case, 60 elephants were found dead—poisoned by farmers—across parts of India and Sumatra.

It still isn't clear why the elephant that attacked Maya Murmu had strayed from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

The sanctuary, which operates as a safari park, is "very much favored" by Asian elephants because of the abundance of water within it, "even during summer," according to the Forest Department.

Newsweek has contacted the local forest department and police for comment.

You think animals are like humans, they very intelligent and revengeful at the same time. I was coming back from either class or somewhere else two days back and I met this fierce and mad looking dog giving another dog a hot chase, who knows what the latter mush have done to it. It seems the woman took the elephants baby away from her or she displaced them from their habitation. There's a reason why they are animals and should be treated with wisdom. I can't keep any as pet. Never!

There are two animals you don't want to f**k with, the elephant and the tiger. These two creatures can hold grudges for years.

There was a case of an elephant attack in Congo. A poacher with his accomplice was after a particular bull elephant wanting to kill it after failing to do so previously. The poacher didn't know the bull elephant saw him from afar. The elephant charged at him. Before he could shoot his rifle the elephant trampled him to death.

That late woman must have shuued away a smaller elephant trying to drink water from the river. The herd must have seen her shuu away the young elephant thus the mother elephant lunged at her killing her instantly.

Aome tribes in Indian openly cremate the dead. The body was not in a coffin. The herd of elephants with keen sight must have sighted her corpse and thought to give her a last beaten.

Mind how you shuu away or throw objects at animals. Some animals hold grudges and would attack you when they get the chance.

The tiger, the bear, and the elephant are wild animals that hold grudges.

You forgot to mention " Crow" those birds don't forget too.....

Jesus! How did I miss Crow and raven? Lord have mercy! These birds are very crazy! A man scared off a Raven when it was younger. After 3yrs, the raven saw the man and flew off. The raven got other memnbers of her gang to always stalk the man. The day the man died, they all flew round his funeral site squeaking in jubilation.

Lmaoooo...your analogy is very funny. Dogs chase one another all the time na!!!
On what that woman did to earn such hatred, I'm very sure she can't do that shiit(taking the elephant babies or displacing them from their habitation) by herself. I suspect she is mixed with a poacher group somehow and that herd matriarch has marked her face for a very long time, prolly when she was a lot younger.

I read a story in 2008 where a group of hunters went hunting.
A hunter shot and killed an elephant.
The other elephant ran away
While the hunters gathered sharing the carcass of the elephant, the one that fled returned with about 5 elephants.
The five new elephants stood back while the the one that fled to call them stepped forward and trampled the particular hunter that shot and killed their colleague.
But they allowed the other hunters to escape
Do you know what they did next?
They threw down trees upon the dead elephant so that no one can take away the body.
Animals are part of life and we are to treat them with respect.
We are even supposed to learn from animals.
What's it in elephant that help the animal to sense water many miles away?
What's it with whales and sounds?
What's it with serpents and infra red?
But we are deceiving ourselves about be higher intelligence whereas we are the problems of the planet

I don't agree with you on what you said about an elephant 'keen' eyesight. Elephants are not eagles or some shiit. They have moderate to poor eyesight and can see really well up close. They thus rely on their other senses, seismic senses(ground vibrations detected by their feet), large ears and sense of smell.

Your stories about keen eyesight and being able to see from afar are conjectures at best. Elephants don't have such strong eye sense. Ground vibrations, smell and hearing must have played greater roles in what happened in the Congo. On the Indian woman issue, Why would she be killed for shooing away a baby elephant? It's more like she threw rocks or something at the baby elephant and the mom heard her baby's cries and came running, only to find a human and decided to get revenge.

But I keenly suspect that the actual truth is closer to what the woman did while young(poaching or inhuman treatment of elephants) and the younger matriarch at that time, marked her face, smell or something. And since they never forgive nor forget, she still remembered her face years later and killed her.

This is more believable. Elephants can behave like this. They have a large brain, complex communication system and social structure, just like humans. They have a compassion range similar to humans too. They mourn their dead and even bury them and often return to these burial sites every year to visit their fallen colleagues.

N.B: Elephants have a range of senses to figure out water from miles away. They can smell it, from moisture in the air or by seismic senses ( ground vibrations detected by their large flat feet) and prolly more than science don't know yet.
