Russia Warns Lithuania Over Kaliningrad Goods Restrictions by edogu(m): 2:50am On Jun 21, 2022
Russia’s foreign ministry has demanded the immediate lifting of Lithuania’s “openly hostile” restrictions on the rail transit of EU-sanctioned goods to Moscow’s exclave of Kaliningrad.

Sandwiched between European Union and NATO members Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad receives supplies from Russia via rail and gas pipelines through Lithuania.

The Baltic nation of Lithuania announced last week that it was banning the rail transit of goods that are subject to EU sanctions from mainland Russia to Kaliningrad.

The list includes coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology.

“If in the near future cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation through Lithuania is not restored in full, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry said it had summoned Lithuania’s charge d’affaires in Moscow to protest against the “provocative” and “openly hostile” measures.

Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin said Lithuania’s decision was “unprecedented” and “in violation of everything there is”.

“The situation is more than serious and it requires a very deep analysis before formulating any measures and decisions,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis defended the move and said his country was simply implementing sanctions imposed by the EU, of which it is a member.

He said the measures were taken after “consultation with the European Commission and under its guidelines”.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Vilnius was following EU sanctions.

“Lithuania has not taken any unilateral national restrictions and only applies the European Union sanctions,” Borrell said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

Kaliningrad governor Anton Alikhanov said the Russian foreign ministry would also summon the European Union ambassador to Moscow over the ban.

“This is, of course, a situation, that can be resolved by diplomatic means,” Alikhanov said on Russian television on Monday. “As far as I know, tomorrow (Tuesday) Marcus Ederer, the European Union ambassador to Russia, will be summoned to the foreign ministry …. and he will be told of the appropriate conditions involved here.”

There was no immediate confirmation from the Russian foreign ministry.

Alikhanov said the Lithuanian ban would affect about 50 percent of all imports to the territory.

The ban was confirmed on Friday by the cargo arm of Lithuania’s state railway service in a letter to clients following “clarification” from the European Commission on the mechanism for applying the sanctions.

Urging citizens not to resort to panic buying, Alikhanov said two vessels were already ferrying goods between Kaliningrad and Saint Petersburg, and seven more would be in service by the end of the year.

“Our ferries will handle all the cargo”, he said on Saturday.

Lithuania’s foreign ministry stressed that passenger travel and the trade in non-sanctioned goods would not be affected by the ban.

“The transit of passengers and #EU non-sanctioned goods to the #Kaliningrad region through the territory of #Lithuania continues uninterrupted,” the ministry said on Twitter.

Home to the headquarters of Russia’s Baltic sea fleet, the exclave was captured from Nazi Germany by the Red Army in April 1945 and ceded to the Soviet Union after World War II.

What Lithuania did is very dangerous and irresponsible. The agreements signed with Lithuania when they were seeking to join the EU, stipulated unrestricted transport of goods between Russian mainland and the enclave of Kaliningrad via Lithuanian territory.

This action is tantamount to a declaration of war, as Russia is not trading with Lithuania, but rather transporting its own goods to its own territory which is separate from the mainland (Kaliningrad). A comparison will be Canada restricting trade channels between the American mainland and Alaska which pass through Canadian territory.

I do hope the Lithuanian government and by extension the EU Commission have their thinking caps on and quickly choose to walk back on this decision.

Due to recklessness on all sides particularly Lithuania and the EU, we are gradually inching to WW3.

At the bolded. Did Russia not have the same agreement with Ukraine not to invade the country when Ukraine was handing over their nukes to Russia?

What existed between Russia and Ukraine, and by extension the US and UK was a Memorandum and not an agreement. (Research to know the difference).

The Memorandum amongst other terms, clearly spelt out that Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity will be respected by Russia, the US and the UK in return for the Neutrality of Ukraine. Ukraine singlehandedly with the help of the Western Paymasters destroyed that Memorandum in February 2014 when it carried out a coup d'etat against its constitutionally elected government and declared in its constitution an intention to join NATO.

Secondly, there is this false assumption about Ukrainian nukes. There was no "Ukrainian nukes".

All command and control apparatus for Nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were domiciled in Moscow.

Furthermore, when the Soviet Union was collapsing, all mobile and Tactical nuclear weapon systems were withdrawn to Russia. So what the Ukrainians had were nuclear missiles sitting in silos, with no means of controlling it (to launch or to detonate).

Hence their claim as a Nuclear power is just a charade as it is was clear that the nukes were useless to Ukraine. However, the major reason for concern was if a terrorist purchased or stole the warhead and used it as a dirty bomb in some other part of the world.

That is why the Budapest Memorandum also included the destruction of those missiles.

Is memorandum not an agreement signed by 2 nations Russia and Ukraine? You just want to play smart and end up shooting yourself in the leg. Was it not written in the papers signed by Russia and Ukraine that Non will invade each other? Did Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and 2022? Did Russia fulfill its part of the Memorandum?

Even Finland that closed its border with Russia, will open same border from 30th June, for all and Japan will open it too on same day with Russia.

By July ending, don’t be surprised to see German and France airlines going to Russia.

You forget that Russia invaded and annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in the aftermath of the west-sponsored Dignity Revolution. So you all expect Russia not to protect its own interests following the US-sponsored revolution?
After all, Crimea is theirs.

Now, Ederer said after a meeting at the ministry in Moscow that he had asked Russia to resolve the issue through diplomatic mean as Russia vowed to use military mean.
Nobody in the EU want war because of Lithuania government, as Germans, French, Italy and even Turks don't want to be drag into war because of Lithuania.

Earlier Lithuania itself stated that the restrictions were introduced under the leadership of the EC.
The EC shifted the responsibility for restricting Kaliningrad transit to back Lithuania today

"Since Lithuania has begun to implement the sanctions in this way, it means that they should be interpreted this way," said European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer.
