Turkey approved the invitation of Finland and Sweden to NATO at the summit in Madrid. Just last month, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised that as long as he "occupies the presidency of Turkey," Ankara "cannot say yes to the approval of NATO membership for those countries that support terrorism," referring to Sweden and Finland .

However, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö has now announced that "the foreign ministers have signed a tripartite memorandum which confirms that Turkey will support the invitation of Finland and Sweden to join NATO at the Madrid summit." The alliance's allies will, within the next few days, agree on concrete steps to bring the two countries into the alliance, with "a decision being inevitable."
