Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, one of the most well-known candidates standing in Nigeria’s presidential election in February, is a candidate about whom we know very little. His name comes first. Although the Tinubu family is well-known in Lagos (a downtown square is named for Madame Tinubu, a wealthy slave trader from the nineteenth century), they have insisted that Bola is unrelated. His age is another factor. He says he was born in 1952, but that would imply he was only seven years old when he had Folashade, who just celebrated turning 60 with all the pomp and circumstance of a Yoruba chief. (She has now changed her Wikipedia article at least three times, claiming to be 46.) His education is a contentious one as well. Nobody has been able to learn where he attended high school. When his “mistake” was discovered, it was revealed that he had actually meant Chicago State University when he had claimed to have graduated from the University of Chicago, which was well-known (which nobody had heard of).
