A devastated dad has been filmed crying after he reportedly spent a year doing maths tutoring with his son — only for him to get just 6% on his exam.

The upset father, said to be from Zhengzhou in China's central Henan province, can be seen going through a range of emotions as he reacts to his child's academic flop.

After looking at the report card, he slaps his knees in frustration before the camera cuts to him raising his arms above his head and eventually using a towel to wipe his eyes.

The bizarre clip went viral on Chinese social media site Weibo this week as millions of schoolchildren received their results from the gruelling June assessment season.

A caption underneath the post claimed he had spent long nights trying to teach his son how to better his Maths skills for the past year, suggesting his upset display was out of both disappointment and exhaustion.

Internet users gave mixed responses to the short video, with some sympathising with the father while others took the boy's side.

One user poured their heart out for the dad as they said: "I feel pain and sadness across the screen", while another agreed with his response as they said: "yes, there is more room for improvement in the future".

A different side of the debate however asked whether his reported score of 6 out of 100 in fact reflected most badly at his own tutoring, as one person wrote: "Could it be that what the father taught was wrong".

Another raised the prospect that the failure was an act of teen rebellion, writing: "Is it possible that the child did it on purpose"

Last July the Chinese government unveiled measures that banned the highly lucrative private tutoring business, in a move they claimed would stop middle-class families from gaining an unfair educational advantage.
