Buffon, Nedved, Giorgio Chiellini, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessandro Del
Piero and David Trezeguet all stayed as Juventus bounced straight back
up to the big time.
Three seasons later, and Juventus were winning Serie A again – and
look set to win their sixth consecutive title.
But what about those players that left when they were relegated? What
happened to them?
Well, inspired by Squawka , let’s take a look:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic | Inter | £21m
Zlatan was never going to play in Serie B, was he?
Instead, he continued his impressive rise with Inter – helping them to
win three consecutive league titles before joining Barcelona.
A falling out with Pep Guardiola meant he left the Camp Nou after just
one season as he returned to Italy with Milan.
More league titles in PSG followed and the Swede now finds himself at
Manchester United.
Not a bad career.
Emerson | Real Madrid | £13.6m
Emerson followed Fabio Capello to Real Madrid but returned to Italy
within a year to sign for Milan.
Within two years, though, his contract had been terminated and he
returned to his native Brazil with Santos.
Gianluca Zambrotta | Barcelona | £12m
Zambrotta enjoyed two seasons at Barcelona, following Juve’s relegation
– but failed to win any major trophies during that time.
In 2008, he returned to Serie A to join Milan where he spent the final
four seasons of his career.
Patrick Vieira | Inter | £8m
Vieira remained in Italy to sign for Inter, where he stayed for three-and-
a-half seasons.
He then moved back to England to end his career at Manchester City.
Adrian Mutu | Fiorentina | £6.8m
Mutu went from his own controversies at Chelsea to Juventus’
controversies.
But things didn’t exactly improve for Mutu in Fiorentina as he failed a
doping test before being suspended by the club for going AWOL.
He then got relegated from Serie A with Cesena before failing to
impress with AC Ajaccio in France.
He then had spells at Petrolul Ploiesti, Pune City and ASA Targu Mures.
Fabio Cannavaro | Real Madrid | £6m
Cannavaro used Juventus’ relegation to move to Real Madrid for just
£6m.
He enjoyed three seasons at the Bernabeu, winning two La Liga titles
before returning to Juventus for the 2009/10 campaign.
He left Europe to spend his final season playing for Al-Ahli Dubai.
Lilian Thuram | Barcelona | £4m
Thuram was reaching the end of his career when Juventus were
relegated and spent two further seasons at Barcelona before retiring due
to a rare heart condition.
