The uterus can develop fibroids, which are rounded growths. Almost always, they are benign or non-cancerous. Fibroids come in sizes ranging from pea-sized to melon-sized. Other names for them include leiomyomas and myomas.

Fibroids are highly frequent, affecting 20 to 50 percent of all women, according to estimates. They most frequently afflict women in their 30s and 40s, and for unknown reasons, African-Americans experience them more frequently. Many women who have fibroids also have family relatives who do.
It’s unclear why fibroids develop, but several factors may influence their formation.

Symptoms of fibroids may include:
• heavy bleeding between or during your periods that includes blood clots
• pain in the pelvis or lower back
• increased menstrual cramping
• increased urination
• pain during intercourse
• menstruation that lasts longer than usual
• pressure or fullness in your lower abdomen
• swelling or enlargement of the abdomen
• How are fibroids diagnosed?
• For a proper diagnosis, you’ll need to see a gynecologist to get a pelvic exam. This exam is used to check the condition, size, and shape of your uterus.
You may also need other tests, which include:
Ultrasound
Pelvic MRI

How are fibroids treated?
Our specialist will develop a treatment plan based on your age, the size of your fibroids, and your overall health. You may receive a combination of treatments.

Fibroids can affect your fertility in several different ways, depending on their size, location, and type. Submucosal fibroids specifically—a type of fibroid that bulges into and/or grows in the lining of the uterine cavity—may contribute to infertility or pregnancy loss.
