Face Kidnap Charges In India FOR sometime now, destination India has been it for Nigerians seeking cheaper and effective medical treatment. But feelers emanating from that enclave indicate that the raging kidnap saga in the country which unwittingly is making Nigerians in diaspora suspects, as well as targets of attack, may have thwarted the usual high Indian hospitality. While many affluent Nigerians visit India to seek transplant of organs, thereby swelling Indian dealers and doctors pockets, a few are there in search of greener pastures. But now the safety for these erstwhile welcome visitors, appears in doubt following allegations of human parts dealers, man eaters-cannibal and kidnappers from the locals. The latest sad incident involved two Nigerian men who were beaten silly by an Indian mob crowd over suspicions of kidnap and cannibalism. Since the incident last week, one question has remained on many lips: Is it a case of racism or kidnap? National Daily Weekend gathered that the incident which at first seemed to be an aggravated misunderstanding between locals and a group of Nigerians living in Ambedkar Colony in Chhatarpur, turned ugly with the immigrants being charged by the police. The Nigerians duo's ordeal instead of abate, really got compounded by the Indian police which intervened but chose to register a case of kidnapping against them under Section 366 of IPC within 24 hours. The south district police filed the case under this section as locals claimed the accused were allegedly trying to kidnap a boy. But legal experts have said that the section is applied only when the victim is a girl. Obioro, 34, and his Nigerian friends, meanwhile, are angry with Delhi Police for not arriving early enough to protect them from the angry mob on the fateful Friday night. But they said the allegation against their community that they eat children has hurt them the most. “We don't eat children. One has to be insane to say something like this”, said Francis, a Nigerian national, who stays in the building where the incident took place. Francis and his friends said that when the incident took place the entire lane was blocked. “We couldn't escape. The mob vandalized my house and destroyed everything I had. The Indian government should do something about it.” Odien Ajumogobia Locals, however, said Friday's attack did not take place because of their colour, but because Obioro and his friends tried to kidnap 8-year-old Adkil, who managed to escape. “People here were just trying to protect the child. We would have done the same thing if an Indian was involved,” said Mohd Vakil, a local resident. Obioro fractured his left leg as he jumped from the 2nd floor of the building and was beaten up by the mob. He underwent a surgery at AIIMS Trauma Centre and doctors say his condition is stable. “I've often heard Nigerians accuse Igbos of cannibalism , citing the madman Clifford Orji who happens to be an Igboman. Did he commit his crime because he was Igbo or because he was possessed of the devil? Secondly, why did his accomplice in his human eating, a Yoruba man get less notoriety than him? Is it the same calculated attempts by the Nigerian media to paint the Igbo man as evil?” But an independent source told National Daily Weekend that the Indians apprehension could have derived from the fact that even the poor farmers are making a kill from organ sales. In fact for “the kidney, lungs, and liver, patients from the oil rich African country pay between five thousand and 15 thousand dollars if the donor is contracted by their kinsmen, but same organs go for as high as three million on the streets Lagos, the source said. “Consequently, any suspected attempt by Nigerians to start harvesting human parts or organs in India for likely competition with the indigenous community, they would be challenged with all their might, the source added. Fear, however , is that if nothing urgent is done to nip the ugly attack trend in the bud, it is capable of scaring away a good number of India-hooked the Nigerian visitors to other Asian nations, a situation which would adversely affect the now booming organ and transplant business and perhaps the vibrant health care industry of the country. http://nationaldailyngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2834:cannibalism-alarm-two-nigerians-mobbed&catid=99:current-cover&Itemid=489 |
