LAWMA Clears Waste Backlog, Warns Against Indiscriminate Dumping by Lanrelagboi: 6:26am On Jul 26, 2022
The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, is clearing the backlog of waste around the city, largely through massive night operations.

The operations between the hours of 10pm and 4am, is personally coordinated by the Managing Director/CEO of the Authority, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, and have witnessed the clearance of waste indiscriminately dumped at some unauthorised locations following diesel scarcity and its exorbitant price, which negatively affected the waste evacuation efforts of the PSP operators and the agency.

Some of the areas already covered by the intensive operations include Mushin; Oshodi; Ejigbo; Lagos Mainland; Apapa axis; Surulere; Lagos Island; Ikoyi; Lekki axis; Victoria Island; and Ajah, among others.

Recall that the LAWMA helmsman, few days ago, promised that the agency would use the opportunity of cessation of rainfall and appreciable progress on landfills' rehabilitation, to cart away the backlog of waste.

Commenting on the progress made so far, Odumboni said: "Remember I said during the week, that we will capitalise on the cessation of rainfall and progress made on the rehabilitation of our landfills, to clear the heaps of waste.

"The strategy has paid off as we have successfully cleared waste in most areas of our Lagos Central 1 and 2, as well as East 1 and 2 districts. We are happy at the pace of progress, and the operations will continue, until all parts of Lagos are covered", he stressed.

Odumboni further appealed for support from residents to stem the tide of improper waste disposal, by bagging and containerising their waste, as well as patronising assigned PSP operators, adding that those caught in the act of reckless waste disposal would be made to face the law.

"We are appealing for cooperation from all residents to restore sanity back to our environment. Bagging and containerisation of waste, while waiting for evacuation by assigned PSP operators, remains an effective means of curbing indiscriminate waste disposal. Anyone caught dumping indiscriminately would be sanctioned accordingly", he said.

The nonchalant attitude among most Lagosians towards keeping their environment clean is appalling. lipsrsealed
When it starts to rain, you will find most market women and some household emptying their bins into the drainage system and thereby causing a disruption to the free flow of the raindrops which then results in a waterlogged environment.
The funny aspect among most Lagosians is the attitude of "following suit." You can drop a dirt bin by the junction illegally at night, only for you to wake up the next morning to find heaps of dirt bins following suit, and it continues that way every day till the lawma agency comes to pack them off.

Funny signs on the wall you will find over there;

Drop dirt here and pay a fine of 5k grin
Drop dirt here and bury your family grin
Drop dirt here and never see progress in life grin .... etc.

Come the next day, you will still find dirt there. Dem no send anyone. Lagos life is a crazy hell to live in, especially on the mainland. grin grin

It will continue like that until we have a visionary leader who will bring waste managements expert that will convert our enormous wastes to energy or something reasonable...i have read of some countries even buy these wastes from their citizens.... Naija is way backward and one idiot is busy saying Emilokan.....Ogun kill anyone supporting thienubu and his other brother Atiefku..... Let us all endeavor to be obedient for once (2023)

The government need to put strict law in place. You dump refuse anyhow you do community service for 4 weeks. We can’t continue to appeal to people that do not heed to simple instructions.

Those road side vendors that sell food and all just dump their waste on the culvert anyhow they like. They keep doing this because the government isn’t punishing anyone.

Be more strict with waste disposal laws and see people adjust their silly behaviors. Something they can’t do in their homes.

Over 10 million Lagosians still dey buy sachet pure water and you expect indiscriminate waste dumping to stop Just forget domestic and market wastes for a second, and imagine 10 million people buying sachet and bottled water every day with the inept waste management system we run in Lagos? You think LAWMA could handle that?
How about the LASG providing potable water supply, so citizens don't have to litter the streets and clog the drainage with plastic bags and bottles?
How about LASG letting the Local Government take care of refuse disposal, and providing them with the logistics and personnel to do this job?
No government in Nigeria, State or Federal plans for anything or for anyone in this country, but it's always cool to blame the suffering masses who're at the receiving end of the gross incompetence of the useless self-serving idiots in power!

Una never ready o. Until floods swamp us all out of Lagos, una go get sense.
Nonsense!

These ones are not okay. They haven't been working for weeks now, up to one month now actually

They only pack the dirts on the main roads and head back to wherever.

Many streets have their wastes filled and overflowing just because LAWMA haven't showed up for weeks. Some have even resorted to burning the wastes little by little at night.

(The story is the same all the way from Papa Ashafa to Ayobo-Ipaja)

PLEASE LAGOSIANS LET'S HAVE SENSE. DON'T LITTER EVERYWHERE INDISCRIMINATELY. IF YOU HAVE ANY TRASH WITH YOU, POCKET IT OR BAG IT UNTIL YOU FIND A WASTE BIN TO DISPOSE IT. THROWING STUFF OUT OF A MOVING VEHICLE IS A CRIME AND IT'S HORRIBLE. THIS SHOULD AS WELL BE STOPPED. LET'S END THIS CULTURE OF DIRTINESS.

The truth is, Nigeria will not progress until several agencies are privatized. Waste management should be privately owned. That way it would be treated as a business.

None of them is coming out to shout they don't want sanwo Olu because he is doing Tinubu bidding unlike Ambode.

Stop !
Is Abuja better?
This is one of the reasons they used to deceived Nigerians, especially the Southerners that they want to create a new Capital better than Lagos.
Now the same Abuja is withnesing - more criminals, dirtiness, kidnapping, gangsters activities, terrorism within its environs!
Our so called 'Big Men' and Nigerians in general are not disciplined,as what they can't do in London, Europe or America is done in Nigeria,as soon as they stepped into our soil.Today,we don't have men as good leaders to give directions!
For instance, keeping dirty things in their vehicles until they reach their homes, they will rather dropped them on the highways or drainages!
