When we think about script writing, we mostly think of movie scripts right?

But then, do you know you can write a script for basically anything? Social media, advertisements or commercials, Videos and skits, Games etc. A script is written to tell a visual story, so why limit scriptwriting.

Focusing on a script for an ad, it is important to know that an ad is usually within 15 to 30 seconds for most TV Commercials and a 30 seconds spot is 75 to 85 words.

To get started as either a first timer scriptwriter or a professional scriptwriter, there are five questions you need to have answers to:

1. What is the problem and what are the benefits?

Here the basics refer to what the company is all about. What is their story, their culture and their identity? An advertisement should represent them and enhance their voice.

Who is their audience and what connects to them emotionally? What connects to teenagers and young adults might not necessarily speak to moms with kids within the age range of 1 to 5. You want to know who you are addressing and how to address them in the language they understand.

And finally, what are their competitors doing? I am sure you don’t want to do the same thing that everyone else is doing right? Because then what makes you different? The more unique and authentic your voice is, the more efficient your advertisement.

2. What is the aim?

The purpose of an ad is to sell. Either you are selling an idea, a thought process, a brand or a product, you are selling. And so depending on which of the listed above you are selling, your choice of words would differ. Know your aim and shoot at it.

3. Have you read the script?

And I do not just mean reading only to spot grammatical errors. How about a table read? Practice. Act as the Voice Over. A table read allows you to know what sounds right and what does not. Bring your script to life and kill it if you have to, to make it perfect.

Thanks for reading. Therefore, If you have anything in addition, feel free to share.
