Tuesday’s meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government has again ended without an agreement.

This means the six-month old strike by public university lecturers is set to continue.

The striking lecturers had met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee on Tuesday at the National University Commission in Abuja with high hopes of resolving the impasse.

A senior member of ASUU, who craved anonymity told Channels Television that members of the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come with any new offer on the table.

Instead, the ASUU source said, the committee pleaded with the lecturers to suspend the ongoing strike, with promises that their concerns will be included in the 2023 budget.

According to the source, the meeting, which started at about 12pm, lasted for about three hours without any agreement reached.

ASUU’s Demands
ASUU embarked on a four-week warning strike on February 14.

On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government meet all of its demands. A 12-week extension was announced on May 9.

Since May 9, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.

One bone of contention for the academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.

But the Federal Government has said it doesn’t have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The agreement was struck in 2009.

Another is the issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The academics have proposed an alternative payroll system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

The worrying thing is that none of the leading presidential candidates has shown clearly how his government will meet ASUU demands and solve incessant ASUU strike once and for all in the face of dwindling oil revenues.

None! And that's f*cking worrying.

Let FG harvest the 48 billion Naira Magu recovered from Corrupts politicians, collect 40 billion Naira from the former accountant general Idris, (out of 167 billion he stole), then take 12 billion Naira from APC out of the money realize from Sales of forms, the total of 100 billion Naira and present it to ASUU, I can bet the strike will be called off before 10AM tomorrow.
It is as simple as that, but this unfortunate government can never get anything right, how can you come with empty hand and tell Lecturers after six months of strike to return to class room?

We were all warned in 2015 not to bring in clueless persons to government but some stupid fools refused to hear that advice. Now see the indelible mark it has left on us while some urchins are busy trying to repeat the same mistake they made in 2015

I taught Tinubu is helping Buhari to mediate in order for the strike to be called off in order to score cheap political points. Little did I know that APC is a scam and association of scammers. Affliction shall rise up the second time.

Definitely this government doesn't even have the students (youths) as on of her priorities... Why would you come for a six-month strike negotiation with an empty hand? Isn't EDUCATION part of the so called "annual f**king budget". SMH cry

If common Bashir earns N1m, ASUU should add one more condition to the negotiation, that is that government publishes all salaries and allowabces of all political appointees.
