Jaiye,a young man in his early thirtys known as Dj Willy jay was in his small studio, wondering out loud why with his gift of sound and music he is only being called to perform small parties and they are usually children birthdays,he sat down on the sofa in the studio while drinking Garri with fish, 2 minutes later he received a call from his girlfriend she was asking for money to make her hair and buy postinor 2 pills he asked how much and she said 20K, he replied "as for the hair she it's time to cut it ,low cut fits you die and as for the pills maybe you should keep the belle, when you born it, I go kill am myself", she insulted him and cut the call, he cut the call saying she things hes stupid, just 6 sessions of romp and shes saying shes pregnant, is that how easy it is to get pregnant. He continues his meal, then a friend knocks, he hid the garri and fish by the window while asking who it was, his friend entered, after some small talk the friend said he met someone on the way that sold him a chain then told him to sel it to whoever hes going to meet, he brought out the chain with a ring as pendant, it was made of iron,Jaiye looked at his friend and said,i will share my food with you for the chain, his friend hissed while he strolled to the window to get the food, unfortunately it had poured to the floor,he turnedback looked at his friend with anger shouting "nkan se mi"(something has done me),he was greatly pained by the loss of the food then gave his friend 4 #200 notes he kept in seperate places in his studio after asking him to close his eyes.
His friend left and he wore the iron chain ,continued trying to make music but slept off briefly after a few minutes,he woke hearing voices like 20 people talking at the same time,he was disoriented, one of the voices stood out, tells him to close his eyes and listen,he kept looking round but finally succumed and closed his eyes to concentrate and listen, the voice started to hail him with his household name and ended it with abeti erin..{Elephats ears},asked him why he hasnt wondered how he could hear sounds clearer than others and hear things so far away, told him there is a secret about his family and the house hes living but he cant continue talking to him for long he should go to anywhere high ashiri would continue talking to him as long as he has the chain on.
He couldnt beleive what was happening so he took a half consumed bottle of alomo bitters(liquor)shook it a little while inquisitively moving his head left and right as if trying to look for impurities in the remaining dring,he eventually threw it to the corner of the room and building briskly, the crowd voices were still ringing in his head but not as loud as before as he walked towards mama Ngozis table where she sells rice and beans on opposite side of the road,"mama de mama" he said, trying to get on her good side a little since he is one of her chronic debtors,"mama, why noise plenty like this, abi den dey do party for una house, why una no tell me?",she looked at him from his feet to his head thinking its one of his ways of starting conversation in order to buy more food on credit, she replied "which noise de ur papa house,my two thousand six hundred dey ur hand u never pay,you con dey hear noise, abi you dey mad?" ,he ran before she could hold him as she moved towards him shouting back at her "no kill yourself, even nigeria owe money, as fat as you are see how fast you run..kirokodile",he laughed as he ran away.
There was a 3 storey church building down the road,he went to the balcony on the top floor to see if theres an invisible force called asiri that would talk, after waiting 20 minutes while eating groundnut with no luck,he decided he must have taken too much liquor. On turning,he looked round and saw a hill few streets away was even higher than,he took started walking towards it,on getting there, all was still the same,he was disappointed till he felt the chain getting warm,he wanted to remove it but he felt powerless, the wind grew stronger and in that moment of fear he heard a voice and understood who asiri was,he discovered he didnt need to come this high, all he had to do was close his eyes and listen to the whisper of the wind,he felt greatly relieved,he figured the crowdy voices he had been hearing were actually secrets of peoples private lives, whether it was them thinking of it or telling confidants he didnt know,he was told he has a journey to make,he didnt know who was talking but the message was clear enough,it was a short but distant journey, short because it takes 5 seconds ,distant because its a journey of 50 years,he laughed at the confused voice,"abi you go drink my remaining alomo?" he laughed. He learnt a few things from the voice before the wind speed decreased, the wind told him he had access to 5 places but no matter what, the fifth place shouldnt be entered,if he could discover his tasks and do them,he has a lot of gold waiting for him,he got home and put things he might need in his backpack,he held his last #2600 wondering which bus station he should go,he locked the door and got to the street before he remembered the last instruction, whe went back to his door, took out the ring from the chain which was now glowing silver, knocked on his door once,he turned the handle, without the key the door opened,he entered and to his suprise, this wasnt his house.
He looked round and saw old furnitures, old books, reading glasses,on the wall there were certificates and awards of belonging to someone of high mental prowess, that made him very sure the room isnt his, they belonged to a Prince Professor L. He had just accepted the post of Junior Research Fellow in Physiology at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus 2 weeks ago.Jaiye was a bit impressed, not sure where he was yet,he walked outside and it was a mind blowing experience,he saw people wearing bell bottom and lots of people walked around with old radios close to their ears,he asked a midddle agedman sitting on the staircase of the next building what was going on,he stired at him like he was looking at a mad man,Just last 3 weeks Yakubu changed our legal tender to naira from pounds, what a smart man,he presided over a controversial Nigerian Civil War and delivered the famous "no victor, no vanquished" speech at the war's end in an effort to promote healing and reconciliation, today a plane crashed in Kano, Nigeria killing 176 people.I am listening to my radio to know the careful steps this great man would take, then the man continued paying attention to the old radio he held close to his left ear,Jaiye saw a copy of what looked like a low budget magazine,it was the punch newspaper,it had black and white image of the accident but most importantly,it had todays date...23rd of january 1973..
