1. Is north-south presidential rotation stated in the Nigerian constitution (1999 as amended)? If not, your argument falls flat! Modern nations are governed by laws and process not ‘feelings’ and ‘considerations’

2. The PDP convention picked Atiku, this convention allowed for delegates from all 36 states and the FCT to pick their party’s candidate. Delegates from the south voted for Atiku, why didn’t they have ‘feelings’ that power should return to the south? Because a political party exists to win elections and form a government. The PDP delegates put their best foot forward.

3. Federal character principle has nothing to do with power rotation. It simply implies that political appointments should be spread to accommodate every part of the country as opposed to concentrated in one part of the country. Not that the presidency, an elective office, should be bounced around between two regions or only 3 tribes. The fact that the top 4 offices in the land are shared between geopolitical zones is a convention not law. This is why it can be disregarded i.e. present VP and speaker are from the same region.

4. Lastly, do yourself a favor and go get a proper education.

Your argument against rotation makes no sense because the skewed and lopsided political structure of Nigeria created by northern soldiers necessitated/necessitates rotation of the presidency between the north and south of Nigeria, right from 1999. Atiku had to abandon PDP in 2015 to enhance rotation of presidency to the north.
Mind you, Atiku Abubakar is now banking to win through exploitation of the skewed and lopsided political structure of Nigeria created by northern soldiers to favour Arewa.
What criteria did northern military dictators use to proliferate too many and mostly non viable states in the old Northern region but shortchanged the two southern regions that formed independent Nigeria with the northern region in 1960?
It's this lopsided political structure that necessitated zoning of the presidency between the north and the south, because with the extant 36 states and Abuja political structure of Nigeria, it's very difficult for any southern presidential candidate to win 25% of votes in 24 states, as required by the electoral laws.

If north refuse rotation of the presidency, north must succumb to calls for political restructuring of Nigeria democratically.

Unfortunately for Wike, lamido is actually quite intelligent.

He brought in a lot of reforms in Jigawa, that it helped pull not just his state but Nigeria up in the "Ease of Doing Business" ranking.

I knew he took over from an extremely corrupt predecessor who was also a notorious womanizer. That governor even married the daughter of the then Nigerien president.

You are completely off it. British colonialists decided for their own interests to make areas south of the niger ‘NORTH’ i.e. Kwara, Kogi and Benue. To be honest, each of these states 3 states including northern Edo (Auchi) are heavily historically influenced by the north.

There is no lopsidedness created by northerners. In fact, the first ‘state creation’ was the midwest state (bendel) that was split from the western region. After this, state creation has generally been even across zones. The last state round of creation in the north was during Abacha i.e. NW Zamfara, NE Gombe, NC Nasarawa, SW Ekiti, SE Ebonyi and SS Bayelsa. IBB went a similar route with the creation of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta-Edo and Enugu states. Reciprocation involved Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Adamawa-Taraba and Yobe.

This shortchanging is in your mind. In any case, who says states like Osun and Ebonyi are viable? How many states in Nigeria are viable today? Goodluck Jonathan was the one that scuttled rotation. This is the fact. He was supposed to finish Yar’adua’s tenure and step down but due to his amazing shortsightedness, he not only ran in 2011 but in 2015 as well. His supporters said what at the time? “No such thing as zoning in the constitution”. You want to cry foul now? Its too late. The south jettisoned rotation for short term goals. You cannot bring it back now. In any case, rotation is not the law of the land and what is considered north today is two thirds of Nigeria’s land mass with 19 states while the south with barely a one third of the land mass has 17 tiny states. So really who has been shortchanged?

If you remove Lagos, which attracts people from all over the country living there. The south also has a much smaller population than the north yet you feel power should be shared equally…on what basis? Landmass, raw population or religion? Or maybe ‘feelings’ if you want power rotation make a constitutional case for it, push for its addition in the constitution.

The only identity they have in this country is religion and ethnicity, nothing more. It’s either I’m a Christian or I’m a Moslem, I’m a Fulani or I’m an Igbo. Nigeria cannot move forward except they think it will be them. That’s where we are.

“We are in a country where someone with primary school certificate can be appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. That tells you how bad this country has become. move forward except they think it will be them. That’s where we are.

The mentality of sharing proceeds from the south of Nigeria between the north and the south is still in your mindset, that makes you justify land mass or population figures as yardstick to determine where new political units can be created in a country formed by diverse regions; the same mentality which guided northern military dictators to proliferate excess number of states in the old Northern region which has larger land mass, and yet to be verified larger population, than the southern regions.
By the way, it's only in Nigeria that an arid zone like the north of Nigeria has more population than the rain forest southern regions. Tell me the usual story about one northern man marry too many wives and has more kids than an average southerner.
FYI, in a country formed by diverse regions, land mass or population figures is never used as criterion to proliferate too many new federating units in a region with larger land mass or population; because proliferating undue number of federating units in a region with larger land mass or population figures, goes to tilt balance of political power to favour the region with larger land mass or population.
That's exactly what the northern military dictators did in Nigeria through proliferation of excess number of states in the old Northern region.
That necessitated rotation of the presidency between the north and the south since 1999.

You obviously don't have knowledge of Wike or Rivers politics. This is a man who single handedly made Amaechi governor even when Odili as a sitting governor fought against Amaechi in preference for Omehia. What has kept Wike going is his control of the grassroots, similar to what has kept Tinubu in control of Lagos years after leaving office. The only key factor you might argue for is the fact that Rivers people are not zombies like lagosians, but I don't see Wike becoming irrelevant after his governorship term. His grassroots control is massive

I consider discussions about Nigeria's charged regional politics to be a waste of time but I'll make an exception today.

For over 40 years, southern nigerians have blown hot but always fizzled out when it matters most.

The most recent example of this is the Southern Governors forum. The forum blew hot after its last meeting and issued a communique with its stated demands (you know what those demands were) to show it meant business. Where are they today? undecided

Yes, Nigeria is a deeply unjust country with a lopsided and ultimately unworkable structure. But I put it to you: Nobody from Northern Nigeria can win a major election at the federal level without support from the South. The base is a tripod (North, East, West) and politically, no one leg can stand without the support of at least one other leg.

For over 40 years, popular culture has had northern nigerians portrayed as dim witted, illiterate, clueless incompetents. And yet they continue to outmanoeuver and outwit their 'supposed' southern nigerian superiors, time and time again. Does this make any sense? Who is the clueless and dimwitted one here?

That's exactly what the northern military dictators did in Nigeria through proliferation of excess number of states in the old Northern region.
That necessitated rotation of the presidency between the north and the south since 1999.

1. You’re reverting to a disproven theory. Which northern military dictators created states in the north in a lopsided manner Name them please. State creations were done in 1967, 1976, 1987, 1991 and 1996. I have showed you the balance of state creation between 1987 and 1996. I don’t know if obasanjo in 1976 created states that favored the north.

2. This issue of “our oil” is juvenile. Again, for emphasis, the oil by law belongs to the Federal Republic of Nigeria not states. If you want all the oil revenue, make a constitutional case for it! Simple. Atiku is the only candidate that has seriously and consistently been talking about restructuring of the country via devolution of powers and resources to subnational units. So each state can keep its own resources. Oil has not even been adding anything to govt coffers since the beginning of this year. In any case, it is a dying commodity. In the next quarter century, it’ll be a thing of the past. Agriculture will be Nigeria’s major export sector.

3. Again, educate yourself. Less than 13% of the north is arid. The north is made up mostly of savannah, specifically guinean savannah. This is why there is farming. Who farms in a desert or in the Sahara? You have obviously never even been to the north. Polygamy is a valid argument, a man with 4 wives and over 10 children is commonplace in the north. Obviously, that will impact the population size over time.

4. Lastly, the issue is what is in the law? Rotation? No…then put it in the law if you can. The constitution does not even recognize north and south, it recognizes 6 geopolitical zones, why not have a rotation between all 6 zones. North and south.

Apt. But you needed to have understood the effect proliferation of excess number of states with corresponding representative constituencies in the old Northern region, has on the psyche of southern politicians.
Every election year, a group of politicians composed of mostly northern politicians who are derived from the large number of states proliferated in the northern region, gather and annoint a presidential candidate for one or two largest political parties.
The electorate merely validate the annointed presidential candidate through their votes. To choose that presumed president, northern politicians are in majority, deriving from the undue large number of states and federating constituencies proliferated in the old Northern region. The southern politicians who are in the minority during the choice of the 'arrangee,' president-to-be are helpless.
It's glad you acknowledged the unjust political structure.
The presidencies of Obasanjo and Jonathan were mere aberrations, and would not have been possible if politicians of the northern region had insisted that a northerner would be president.

Funny, there are 2 more states in the north than the south. Just 2! So what really is this proliferation you keep talking about? All over 2 states? The north has the bulk of the population of this country and corresponding landmass, so how do you expect its people to be underrepresented or disenfranchised?

You can as well ask for, say, Texas or California, in the US, to be divided into say, 4 states and corresponding excess number of political constutuencies, while smaller US states like New Jersey or Washington DC, be divided into 2 states with corresponding number of representative constituencies.
Doing that amounts to upstaging the political power balance between the smaller states and the larger US states, in favour of the US states that have larger land mass or population.
The US must disintegrate as one country immediately after such political restructuring.
In Nigeria, states were purposely proliferated in the old Northern region to channel more of the resources of the southern regions to the northern region. And in the process, excess political powers were channelled to the old Northern region, but left the two southern regions at the mercy of politicians of the old Northern region.
