Should Universities Be Autonomous? by blackpanda: 7:34am On Aug 31, 2022
Few people know that Nigerian universities were designed to be Autonomous and financially independent.

Few know that revenue generated by Universities from fees goes back to the universities

Even fewer know that the NUC Act says FGN should only assist financially, not that Universities should be dependent on government.

But clearly our Universities are 100% dependent on government for funding. They really don't bother with innovative ideas or business strategies to generate funds, since they can always go on strike and force government to bring money.

Funding generated from donors, NGOs and foreign governments and directly spent by the Universities without recourse to appropriation or government accounting.

When compared with their private counterparts, it's clear that something huge is missing in Universities administration.

So should we continue with the current structure or declare total independence and autonomy for Universities?
