BITTER kola (Garcinia cola) is found in the tropical rainforest region. Known as Orogbo in Yoruba land, Namijin-goro among Hausa and Akuilu in Igbo language, it is mainly used in traditional hospitality, cultural and social ceremonies such as naming and weddings.

Helps to maintain a healthy liver and gall bladder. The chemical, saponin in bitter kola, is responsible for its cleansing effect. This chemical is used as tonic for the liver, and also, it enhances the functions of the gall bladder. Treat cough. It is very effective in the treatment of cough, diarrhoea, tuberculosis and other bacterial infections due to its antibiotic properties (ability to inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms).

For long life. Researches in modern science have revealed that it contains chemical compounds that will help the breakdown of glycogen in the liver and has other medicinal uses, which account for its longevity property in man.

Relieve Arthritis (joint pain). Bitter kola also reduces inflammation and pain in subjects that had osteoarthritis symptoms because of its antioxidant properties.

For treatment of measles. When ground and mixed with honey, it could be used in the treatment of measles and mumps affecting children; it should be taken orally and also applied externally in the case of mumps.
