Firstly to drift. You need a Rear Wheel Drive car. Preferably manual transmission.


The cars that fit in that description are so much.

In our case, we already had a bmw e30 sedan. 316i but for some reasons it had a poor running engine swapped into it. The m20b27 (eta block) straight 6

So here, we was trying to get the wheels on, and just have it run. Cus its been sitting for some time.

So let me start with the basics.



Now you want to drift. Most of you guys in abj are already familiar with driftleague, carpark drift, drifthunters e.t.c right.

You first consideration is to get a good car to build on.

Now like i pointed out. You get a RWD car.
In naija u can easily find bmw sedans, most 3 series sedan are good enough. If you like you can go with Nissan 350z or 370z or infinity g35.

There are more options. Like lexus is300, mazda miata and so on.


For instance lets say you get a rwd, any rwd car cus this is basic information. You need to have it running fine, engine needs to be great, maybe not perfect but u know. U need manual transmission, or just swap it to manual if its auto. Weld your differential. You need to know what you are doing. (Please Do your research well)

Both auto and manual are driftsble,but for best comfort manual direct. Auto,u will change shocks,thyrod, drift angle ball joints,suspension. Na money.. to me its a waste of time. Drift only abroad. Not nigeria

Competition drift events have rewards here. Its more of motorsports than just entertainment. Like jow it used to be done in the past just for show

So we sorted the wheels, got rear disk brakes as that will be needed in future for a hydraulic handbrake to work with. And welded the diff


Now for engine, the bmw m20 isnt that powerful in stock form.

Options are to build a powerful Naturally aspirated m20 or go forced induction. But from my experience working on BMW engines, m20 parts are very scarce tbh.

Another option will be an m30 big 6. Its a 3.0 - 3.5L engine option. A straight swap for an e30 and will provide enough torque too. Not bad. But same thing parts are scarce.
For a long time i never even hard any of those engines in stock. So i knew from the get go i would need something else

Also alot of Abuja bmw e30 are already running the bmw m30b35. I want something different and more tunable in NA form.

The e30 with its lifeless m20b27e (eta block) for some reasons unknown to us. We bought the car with this engine inside. This wasn't what was meant to be inside an e30 316i

I've a question .why did u weld the differential ?

This way we are able to lock both rear axles together. Its not ideal for normal driving but ideal for drifting.

By that, power is sent equally and always to both rear wheels regardless of any condition unlike in an open differential

After doing some works. Got the engine to run, it had some wiring issues. I believe its all as a result of swapping the engine the job was carried out poorly. But we sorted everything. Fuel pump Relay, and starter wiring were the main issues. Luckily we have been working on BMW's and tracing issues didn't really give us too much tough time.

The main problem is the engine itself.
It ran poorly

And rebuilding it is not ideal. But why......

The engine is an m20b27e. Its a low revving variant of the m20 engine. Even in good condition it doesn't make much power.

You can build a Frankenstein motor combining the big 2.7L block with a 2.5L head from an m20b25 and using the 2.5 pistons. I dont want to go into the details of building a powerful 2.7L m20 engine cus thats not our concern anymore for this build

So now here is a list of things needed to be sorted out for a drift car, but any order you choose to approach it is up to you.

Suspension

Chassis.

Any form of motorsports advantage revolves around power to weight ratio. If you are building a dedicated drift car like we doing. Just strip out the entire interior and trim pieces.
Dash board
Headliner
Rear seats
Carpets
Radio
Air con
The list is soo long. But you should grab the concept by now. Tour car wont look good, but looks isnt important as fast.

Rear compartment. Bare chassis. This applies to the whole interior

So far we were able to strip the entire car. Thats the cheapest mod you can do as it cost ₦0. Its not comfortable. You can keep them for future purposes as selling them won't even give you any thing. Will upload pixs soon

Just incase you fancy the world of drifting. Watch formula D. It will enlighten you more of what drifting is. Currently the FD (formulaD) competition just started in japan. Catch them on YouTube and IG.

But ours is a basic build not a pro specced car. Something you and i can afford to build.

There is this thing whereby you put some kinda plate under the rear wheel of a FWD and you can slide it around.
