CAN denies striking an arrangement with Tinubu on a Muslim-Muslim ticket.


The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has denied having a deal with APC presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the contentious Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

Luminous Jannamike, the association's Special Assistant on Media, stated this in a statement headlined, 'Muslim-Muslim Ticket: CAN Maintains Its Position.'

This was claimed by CAN in response to a news that Tinubu met with the association's leadership over the issue surrounding the party's pick of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu nominated Senator Kashim Shettima, a fellow Muslim, as his running partner for the 2023 presidential election.

CAN insisted that it had not modified its stance on the disputed APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket, a move that infuriated the country's Christian majority.


Tinubu's participation and gift at last week's 70th birthday celebration of Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, should not be interpreted as a financial enticement bribe to pacify the Christian community, according to the organization.



"The attention of the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria has been drawn to a media report titled, 'How Tinubu met, resolved Muslim-Muslim ticket with CAN,' which claimed that the apex Christian body had changed its position regarding the same faith ticket," the statement read in part.

"To put it mildly, the narrative is ludicrous, nasty, and inaccurate, and it should be ignored in its totality by all sane members of society."

"For the record, CAN took a stand against the same religious ticket imbroglio under the leadership of Rev. Dr Samson Ayokunle, its immediate past national president, and His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Okoh still does."
