Records: Neighbor confessed to killing Missouri Girl
AP – 6 hrs ago

, KENNETT, Mo. (AP) — A southeast Missouri man told authorities he suffocated a 3-year-old neighbor girl he found playing at his backyard swimming pool and then threw her body in a floodway ditch, court documents allege.

Shawn Morgan, 43, was charged over the weekend with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence in connection with the disappearance of Breeann Rodriguez.

The child was last seen Aug. 6 in front of her home near Senath, a town of about 1,500 residents located about 200 miles south of St. Louis in southeast Missouri. Her body has not been found.

Authorities said in a probable cause statement that Morgan admitted to an agent of the Bootheel Drug Task Force that he grabbed Breeann and took her inside his home after finding her standing on the ladder of his pool. Morgan said he suffocated her with a white plastic trash bag and that it "felt like it took an hour for the girl to die," according to the probable cause statement.

Morgan told police he then tossed the girl's body in the same trash bag he used to suffocate her and threw it over a railing along Missouri 164 and into a floodway ditch.

He said that when he got home, he dismantled the bicycle the girl had ridden earlier and tossed it in the same water system as the body. A bike found in the water system has been identified as belonging to the girl.

Dunklin County Sheriff Bol Holder told ABCNews.com that investigators were looking for the girl's body in a series of ditches in Hornersville, about six miles from Senath.

"We're dragging the ditches, have helicopters and dogs out there searching. We're making every effort to find her," Holder said.

Morgan was being held without bond. No attorney was listed for him in online court records, and a phone listed under his name was disconnected. A jailer said he couldn't get a message to Morgan.

His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday in Dunklin County Circuit Court in Kennett.

Argentina: DNA links suspect to tourist slayings

AP – 1 hr 24 mins ago

, BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A court spokesman in Argentina says investigators have DNA and ballistics evidence that implicates some of the eight suspects under arrest in last month's slayings of two French tourists.

Spokesman Marcelo Baez says DNA from semen found in the body of one of the victims matches that of Gustavo Lasi. Lasi is a part-time tour guide whose girlfriend was found with a camera and cellphone belonging to the victims.

Baez also says Lasi allegedly owned a .22-caliber rifle that ballistics tests show was used to kill one of the women.

The spokesman says other tests match a .22-caliber pistol to the shot in the back that left the other victim slowly bleeding to death. The pistol was recovered from the property of an ex-convict.

Police charge teenager with London riots murder

By JILL LAWLESS - Associated Press | AP – 8 hrs ago.

LONDON (AP) — A 16-year-old boy was ordered Tuesday to stand trial for the murder of a retiree attacked when he confronted rioters in London, as British judges and prosecutors used tough punishment and name-and-shame tactics against hundreds of alleged participants in the mayhem.

The government said police would get better training and stronger powers to deal with a new and unpredictable era of street disturbances.

"We will make sure police have the powers they need," said Home Secretary Theresa May — including, she suggested, the power to impose blanket curfews in troubled areas.

A teenager, who has not been named because of his age, appeared in court Tuesday accused of killing 68-year-old Richard Bowes, who was found lying in a street during violence in Ealing, west London, on Aug. 8.

CCTV footage captured Bowes being punched and falling to the pavement after he tried to stamp out a fire set by rioters. He died of head injuries three days later.

The suspect, dressed in a black shirt and with his arms crossed, was charged with murder, violent disorder and the burglary of a bookmakers, a supermarket, a video store and a restaurant.

He did not enter a plea and was ordered detained as he awaits trial at the Central Criminal Court.

The boy's 31-year-old mother has been charged with obstructing the police investigation. She also was denied bail.

Police have arrested more than 3,000 people over riots that erupted Aug. 6 in north London and flared for four nights across the capital and other English cities.

And about 1,400 have been charged with riot-related offenses. More than 1,200 have appeared in court — often in chaotic, round-the clock-sessions dispensing justice that is swifter, and harsher, than usual.

Although a public opinion favors stern punishment for rioters, a few cases have made headlines and sparked debate. A London man received six months in jail for stealing a case of water worth 3.50 pounds ($5) from a looted supermarket. A Manchester mother of two who did not take part in the riots was sentenced to five months for wearing a pair of looted shorts her roommate had brought home.

Most of the convicted suspects have been sent for sentencing to higher courts which have the power to impose longer terms of imprisonment. Two-thirds of the accused have not been granted bail. The usual rate for the magistrates' courts hearing their cases is 10 percent.

Although Prime Minister David Cameron said last week that those who participated in the riots should go to prison, the government denied trying to influence the judiciary.

The courts service said "sentencing is a matter for the independent judiciary," though it acknowledged that magistrates in London were being told by their legal advisers "to consider whether their powers of punishment are sufficient in dealing with some cases arising from the recent disorder."

May, the home secretary, said she had pressed prosecutors to lift anonymity from underage defendants convicted of riot-related offenses. Defendants under 18 are customarily offered anonymity by law, even if they are convicted.

Five people died during the unrest, including three men hit by a car in Birmingham, central England as they protected local shops from looters. Two men and a teenage boy have been charged with murdering Haroon Jahan, 20, and brothers Shazad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31.

Several suspects have also been questioned about the death of a man who was shot in the head during rioting in south London.

The Association of British Insurers has estimated the cost from wrecked and stolen property at 200 million pounds ($326 million) but expects the total to rise.

Police were criticized for responding too slowly, particularly in London, but eventually deployed huge numbers of officers at riot zones to quell the mayhem.

May said Britain had entered a "faster moving and more unpredictable" era of public order policing, and promised forces would get new instructions about training riot officers and responding to trouble, as well as new powers.

"Under existing laws, there is no power to impose a general curfew in a particular area," May said, adding that a change to that policy would be considered.

Civil liberties groups condemned the idea. Isabella Sankey, director of policy for the rights group Liberty, said curfews would be of little use during riots.

"Someone who thinks it is fine to commit violence, theft and criminal damage is hardly going to take notice of a police request to kindly leave the area," she said.

The government has already floated a raft of new powers, including allowing police to order anyone suspected of being a thug to remove their mask or hood, evicting troublemakers from subsidized housing and temporarily disabling cell phone instant messaging services.

Cameron has said he will consult former Los Angeles, New York and Boston Police Chief William Bratton on gang-fighting techniques.

Many senior police officers feel stung by the decision to look to the U.S., and by government criticism of their handling of the riots, and oppose plans to slash police budgets as part of sweeping austerity measures.

May acknowledged the government would cut funding to the police by 20 percent over four years, but said that pay freezes and eliminating red tape meant the real-terms reduction would be much lower.

And she said there would be no effect on front-line officers.

"What matters is not the total number of officers employed but the total number of officers deployed," May said.

Opposition politicians and liberal commentators have pointed to racial tensions, poverty and the government's austerity measures as underlying factors in the riots.

Cameron, however, has blamed a "slow moral collapse" that took in poor parenting, gang-related crime and a widespread failure by Britain's leaders to address deep-rooted social problems.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said Tuesday that the government would set up an independent panel — though not a full public inquiry — to hear from victims and investigate the causes of the riots.

Clegg said it would be "a grass roots process where people in the communities affected and the victims who have been so damaged and hurt can give their views about what needs to happen to ensure it doesn't happen again."

Target of murder plot hatched on Facebook is killed, police say

By Dave Warner, editing by Ellen Wulfhorst and Cynthia Johnston | Reuters – 12 hrs ago.

, PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A man who authorities say was the target of a murder-for-hire plot hatched on Facebook by the mother of his child was shot and killed in Philadelphia, police said on Tuesday.

Corey White, 22, died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Monday shortly after being shot in the chest on a Philadelphia street, police spokeswoman Tanya Little said.

White's ex-girlfriend, London Eley, 19, and Timothy Bynum, 18, who have been implicated in an alleged plot to kill White, were in jail at the time of the shooting, Little said.

The pair were arrested in June and charged with criminal solicitation for murder and attempted murder. Police began probing Eley and Bynum after getting a tip that Eley had posted on Facebook asking for someone to kill White, Little said.

Eley had offered to pay a "stack" -- slang for $1,000 -- for the killing, and Bynum allegedly responded on the social media site that he would do the job, Little said.

Prior to the shooting, the two were ordered by a municipal court judge on Monday to stand trial.

No arrests were made after White's death, but two unidentified men were seen in a brown car driving away from the scene, Little said.

Spain: Student plotted attack on anti-Pope Crowd

By DANIEL WOOLLS - Associated Press | AP – 2 hrs 8 mins ago

MADRID (AP) — A chemistry student working as a volunteer for the pope's visit to Madrid was arrested on suspicion of planning a gas attack targeting protesters opposed to the pontiff's stay, officials said Wednesday.

Pope Benedict XVI is due to arrive Thursday for a nearly four-day visit to celebrate World Youth Day, and thousands of protesters railing against his visit staged their march Wednesday night to Madrid's central Sol plaza where they have held months of demonstrations against Spanish politicians and the government's anti-austerity policies.

A police official said the suspect arrested in Madrid Tuesday is a 24-year-old Mexican student specializing in organic chemistry. She would not say whether investigators believe the man was actually capable of carrying out a gas attack, and did not know if he actually had chemicals that could have been used to assault the protesters.

The detainee was identified by the Mexican Embassy in Madrid as Jose Perez Bautista, which said he was from Puebla state, near Mexico City.

He was arrested at a Madrid convention center where the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims coming to town for the papal visit are supposed to pick up their accreditation, the police official said on condition of anonymity in line with the department's rules.

An official with the pope visit's organizing committee said the Mexican was a volunteer helping to deal with the massive flow of people flooding Madrid. She would not give her name, citing the church-run committee's policy.

A total of 30,000 people from around the world are taking part in that organizing effort, 10,000 police are providing security in Madrid and organizers say they expect more than 1 million young pilgrims for World Youth Day, which started Tuesday and runs through Sunday.

The march he allegedly wanted to disrupt happened relatively peacefully, with some shouting between protesters and pope supporters. But it ended with police ousting protesters from the plaza, with at least one arrest of a demonstrator. Riot police monitored the plaza after the demonstrators were cleared out.

Police have 72 hours from the time of the arrest to bring the detainee before a judge at the National Court for questioning or to release him. A court official said he would appear before the judge Thursday at the earliest.

The official — speaking on condition of anonymity in line with court policy — said the detainee had been making threats over the Internet against people in Spain opposed to the pope's visit, and police who'd been monitoring his online activity ultimately decided to arrest him as the visit approached.

Police said in a statement released Tuesday night that officers who searched the detainee's apartment in a wealthy district of Madrid seized an external hard-drive and two notebooks with chemical equations that had nothing to do with his studies.

It said he tried to recruit people via the Internet to help him, and that a computer allegedly used for this purpose was among objects seized by police.

The man had planned to attack anti-Pope protesters with "suffocating gases" and other chemicals, the statement said. But it did not mention police having confiscated chemicals that could be used in an attack.

Mexican Embassy spokesman Bernardo Graue said consular officials had visited Perez Bautista in prison and described him as "relaxed" and in good physical condition as he waits to go before a judge. The Mexican officials did not ask him if he had in fact planned a gas attack, because interrogating him is up to Spanish authorities, Graue said.

Without knowing what chemicals and delivery system the man may have had, it is impossible to know what harm he could have caused on protesters marching in open air through the streets of Madrid, as will happen Wednesday evening, said Magnus Ranstorp, a terrorism expert at the Swedish National Defence College in Stockholm.

The suspect was in Madrid studying with Spain's top government research body, the Spanish National Research Council, and his office there was searched, the police statement said. The council confirmed the arrest but gave no immediate details on the Mexican.

Mexico's Autonomous University of Puebla confirmed that a man with the same name had completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry in 2009 and had expressed interest in doing graduate work in Spain.

"Both the name and the academic background match," said Rafael Hernandez Oropeza, the university's director of international relations. He said Perez Bautista had an 8.6 grade average out of 10, "which is pretty high."

Gloria Leon Tello, the academic director of the university's school of chemistry, said Perez Bautista was a quiet, well-mannered, hardworking student. She had contact with him as an administrator, but did not have him in class.

"He was a very dedicated student, calm, very well-mannered," said Leon Tello, who said his age roughly matched that of the Madrid suspect. "He had very deep values , like discipline, responsibility." Leon Tello said she did not hear him express political or religious views.

Mexico has some history of conservative religious extremism.

In 1926, tensions over Mexico's harsh anti-clerical laws broke into armed conflict between the government and Catholic rebels in the bloody, three-year Cristero War in which tens of thousands died.

In 1928, a young conservative Catholic activist, Jose de Leon Toral, assassinated President-elect Alvaro Obregon.

In the 1960s and 1970s a number of conservative Catholic youth groups grew up at universities in Mexico, including Puebla, and sometimes scuffled with left-wing student activists of the time.

Church organizers say the papal visit will cost about euro50 million ($72 million). Protesters claim the government is essentially spending taxpayers' money on the visit by granting tax breaks to corporate sponsors and perks such as discount subway and bus tickets for pilgrims.

Violence in Pakistani city kills 39 in 2 days

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Suspected gang members killed 39 people in two days in Pakistan's largest city, with many of the victims tortured, shot and stuffed in sacks that were dumped on the streets, officials said Thursday.
The gangs are allegedly affiliated with the city's main political parties and have been blamed for a surge in killings in recent months. The government has been unable to stop the violence, as it also grapples with a faltering economy and a raging Islamist insurgency.

The unrest illustrates the precarious state of Pakistan's stability at a time when the U.S. wants the nuclear-armed country to step up its fight against Taliban militants who stage cross-border attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Seventeen people were killed in Karachi on Wednesday and another 22 on Thursday, said Saud Mirza, police chief in the teeming metropolis of some 18 million people. Many of the victims were tortured, shot in the head and stuffed in burlap sacks, he said.

A resident in one of the neighborhoods that has experienced much of the violence said people were afraid to leave their homes. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared being targeted.

The latest round of violence seemed to be driven by a mix of political and criminal motivations, said Sharfuddin Memon, the security adviser to the government in Sindh province, where Karachi is the capital.

"Gangs operating in the city are involved in the fresh killing," Memon said. "They are kidnapping people for different reasons, torturing and killing."
A senior leader of the most powerful political party in Karachi, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, blamed some members of the ruling Pakistan People's Party for the recent violence. Raza Haroon claimed the killings were being carried out by a committee set up by the Pakistan People's Party to control violence in Lyari Town, a poor area and ruling party stronghold.

"Now the gangs have so much courage that they have started killing Urdu-speaking people ruthlessly," Haroon said in a press conference.
A large number of Muttahida Qaumi Movement's supporters are Urdu-speaking descendants of people who came to Karachi from India soon after the birth of Pakistan in 1947.

"We demand the government stop this horrible genocide of Urdu-speaking people," Haroon said.

Sharjeel Memon, Sindh's information minister and a senior member of Pakistan People's Party, declined to respond to the allegations. He said the chief minister of the province will hold a press conference later Thursday.
Supporters of the Pakistan People's Party have been targeted by the violence as well.

A former national lawmaker from the ruling party, Waja Kareem Dad, was gunned down Wednesday evening, according to Sharfuddin Memon, the security adviser.

The recent violence came after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement left the federal coalition led by the Pakistan People's Party in late June and joined the opposition.

Karachi has a long history of political, ethnic and sectarian violence, but the recent wave is high by historical standards. More than 300 people were killed in July alone.

There were at least 490 political, ethnic and sectarian killings in Karachi during the first half of the year, among more than 1,100 killings overall in that time period, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

There has also been violence in Pakistan's northwest tribal regions along the Afghan border, where the Taliban and other militants have bases.
Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani announced Thursday that an operation in the Kurram tribal region had ended in success. The military operation there has killed more than 200 militants since early July, officials said. The U.N. has said thousands of civilians were displaced.

The army has staged multiple operations in nearly all parts of the tribal belt to push out insurgents, but with limited success. The army has declared victory in various operations, only to resume fighting later when militants regroup.

$2M diamond heist on LA street, no arrests

AP – 3 hrs ago.

, LOS ANGELES (AP) — Masked men in dark clothing stopped a jewelry merchant's car, beat him and stole $2 million worth of diamonds during a brazen Los Angeles street heist, police said Friday.

The merchant appears to have been targeted by professional thieves, police Lt. Alan Hamilton said. No arrests have been made.

"This isn't unusual," Hamilton said, noting there are large jewelry thefts each week in Southern California. "It's usually South American nationals who are very organized and professional."

The victim told investigators he was driving down a well-lighted North Hollywood street about 10:10 p.m. Thursday when his car was blocked by two vehicles. and five to six men jumped out.

The men ran up to the merchant's car and smashed a window while struggling for the backpack containing the diamonds. The attackers got back in their vehicles and fled.

The victim followed the thieves but lost them in traffic.

The victim, who was treated and released from a hospital with minor injuries, was described as a merchant in the jewelry trade business. His name was not released.

"We are treating it as a legitimate crime," the lieutenant said.

that website is an anti-islam polemical website and therefore is not credible due to its biase.

the website itself does not give references for its news feed.what you are doing is simply to spread and repeat what they are posting without you clarifying and confirming the reports.that is spreading "rumor" until you can prove otherwise.

i am asking you to give me credible news references like "reuters","AP","aljazeera","BBC",e.t.c.

not that i support or totally believe all the news outlets, but at least they are news organization people can take news from.
