Health insurance is a type of insurance that covers the costs of medical and surgical expenses incurred by the insured. Health insurance can either be purchased from a private company or obtained through a government program. In Nigeria, there are three common types of health insurance: private health insurance, community-based health insurance, and social health insurance.

- Private health insurance is provided by a number of private companies and covers only the policyholder and their immediate family. Private health insurance plans typically have higher premiums than other types of health insurance, but they also have more comprehensive coverage.

- Community-based health insurance (CBHI) is a type of insurance that is funded and managed by the community itself. CBHI schemes are often established in rural areas where access to formal financial services is limited. In most cases, CBHI schemes cover only basic health care services.

- Social health insurance (SHI) is a type of insurance that is financed by the government and run by non-profit organizations. Social health insurance plans usually have low premiums and enrol large numbers of people, but it often has more limited coverage. In addition, SHI often has smaller networks of doctors and hospitals than private insurers.
