At R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago, the jury has begun deliberating for a second day as they sort through a month’s worth of testimony and arguments regarding the singer’s alleged involvement in the creation of child pornography, the enticement of minors for sex, and the rigging of his 2008 child porn trial.

13 different counts must be taken into account by the jury, some of which include difficult legal issues and evaluations of the credibility of the witnesses.
On Tuesday, September 13, after receiving jury instructions from Judge Harry Leinenweber that included graphic definitions of what constitutes sexual assault, they started deliberations.

Attorney Jennifer Bonjean for Kelly sounded furious before they withdrew on Tuesday, comparing government testimony and evidence to cockroaches and the government’s case to a bowl of soup.

If a cockroach falls into soup, she said, ‘you don’t just pull out the cockroach and eat the rest of the soup. You throw out the whole soup,’ said told jurors. She said of the prosecution’s case: ‘There are just too many cockroaches.’

The 55-year-old R&B singer is already serving a 30-year prison sentence after he was found guilty last year in New York City on charges of federal racketeering and sex trafficking.

In her rebuttal Tuesday, prosecutor Jeannice Appenteng told jurors to remember the girls and women Kelly allegedly abused.
