Atleast two persons have been killed as a cholera outbreak hit a facility where 'repentant' Boko Haram terrorists are being camped in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Zuwaira Gambo, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed this on Saturday.

Gambo said health personnel confirmed the death of two persons from the disease, Daily Trust reports.

The commissioner debunked reports that several deaths were recorded, insisting that “only two persons died”.

She described the figures being quoted on the matter were “unfounded,” adding, “I don’t know where this figure is coming from, but I can assure you that what we have was only two deaths.”

She disclosed that officials from the state ministry of health had been deployed to the facility to fumigate the premises and quarantine those diagnosed with cholera for treatment.

“Officials from the health ministry have moved in; everyone is on the ground to ensure that the situation is brought under control,” she said.

Cholera is a bacterial disease causing severe diarrhoea and dehydration. It usually spreads in water and is fatal if not urgently treated.

President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2015 established the Operation Safe Corridor to encourage 'repentant' Boko Haram terrorists to surrender and be rehabilitated. The programme commenced in 2016.

Thousands of 'repentant' terrorists have graduated from the programme since 2015.
