Title: Octopus

Chapter 1

Hey guys, I know this story I am about to begin will make you judge me, well, I don't care. I know I did what must be done. Yes, I must have bleeped up here and there but I won't blame me, I have seen a lot to trust only my guts and wit.

Growing up wasn't easy especially if your parents couldn't afford one of those places you won't have to be smart and strong just to survive the hungry vultures waiting for someone to lose guard. Once the police gets broke, they zoom into my hood and pick up young boys, to them, everyone is a criminal as long as you are born there.

I wasn't brought up to follow the trend, I guess that's why the few like me were different. They assume we are the ajebos and so picked on us every passing day. I remember one of those days that went wrong. I was so vexed that day over a provocation by my elder brother. I stayed on own minding my business in front of a shop across my family house and one of the boys in my street I never liked walked up to me, I would have avoided him if I had caught sight of him in time, but since I didn't, I had no choice than to gather momentum to take in all his shit.

"Lizard! " He teased and laughed gesturing with my head. I moved my head away grudgingly.

"Your papa don pregnant another ashawo? " he asked jokingly, exposing his brown disorganized small teeth, the look in his eyes glorified the satisfaction of having his fill tormenting me.

"Sabinus " I called, trying not to look up. Sabinus was his birth name, he was way older than I was but that doesn't deter his childish demeanor, "abeg, I am not in the mood for your jokes now" I said trying with every will power in me to sound nice while controling the rising temper that was eager to erupt.

"Goat!" He fumed, "Your papa wey no Bleep your mama well na him you suppose dey frown that your face wey be like rotten baby shit for, Ka! Get out there! Who be this ant wey wan dey speak English for me? Your mama toto just dey smell for your mouth! Ka! Close that stinking pussy..." He said stiffly pointing a finger in my face.

I looked at this guy for who he really was, a skeleton I could easily break in less than a minute. But I was forgetting something, I forgot his record as that mad man you don't mess with, his parents were aware of his madness, even the police.

He continued rating and throwing insults at my parents in the most disgusting language, and when I couldn't take his nonsense anymore, I stormed.

"watin dey worry you Sabinus! You no go do something meaningful with your life other than prying into other people's businesses? Sabinus abeg dey go!" I pointed him out of my face staring angrily into his eyes, telling him I was ready to hit him very hard if he says another word. I could see how he melted and was looking calmly at me. I was ready to take on him brutally and face what comes after.

"Wait oh" na me you dey shout for?" His voice was more of one surprised he offended his boss jokingly.

I kept quiet and was waiting for him to say another stupid thing so I could bounce on him. But to my surprise he just walked away quietly ignoring the few attention that has been drawn knowing he was one with reputation to uphold. I couldn't believe it, Sabi who stopped NEPA from cutting the light of a street light that wasn't his even with the police they came with. Mehn! My head was so big it crawled on the ground, I was feeling a vivid S on my chest.

I told my elder brother about it and he was surprised. I knew the mention of "Sabi" bothers him a lot. Sabinus is a one man riot, he refused to belong to a gang as that guaranteed immunity or else one will be listed in the category of those boiboi's forced to stealing oga's money so they don't get harassed or beaten up while going to run errands, or those who needs to drop something or buy beer else, they would have to bail their treasure (shoe, watch, phone etc). Those in my category always try to talk our way to their mercy and this made us close, which shouldn't be.

Two weeks after, I went to play a street match with another street away from mine. Within the early hours of the second half there where gunshots, an onlooker was shot three times in the chest. The assassin, a chubby boy of about 17, same age as me jumped on a bike and zoomed off with the pilot. In the frenzy I was about getting my things together before joining in, then I caught sight of Sabinus standing with a huge dagger in hand in front of the dying boy lying in pool of his blood, still jerking for life. He crossed over the boy and started running towards me, and all I could see written all over his face was; KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL! That scared my shadows out of me, all that macho I exhibited the other day ran behind my back with its tail under. Before I could even gather my wit my heels were already ahead of me.

I took a look behind after given it my best race; there he was, more vicious than before, just that this time his feet where touching the back of his head, meaning I needed to activate my power engine, and so I flew like a wizard yelling on top of my voice like one chased after by a ferocious tiger, well, I am not far from the truth.

"Watin happen?" my frightened friend Uzo who lived close to where the match was played asked as I ran into their four flat compound. He was standing with someone I didn't bother to take notice of when I ran pass and straight into Uzo's flat and hid myself in his room. He ran after me and asked again. "Watin dey happen? "

I couldn't bring myself to say another word other than "Sabi...Knife! Knife! Sabi, Knife!" While peeping through the window hoping not to see him outside. Funny enough, I never saw Sabinus for two months after that. I lived in constant fear and had multiple nightmares. I always felt I would be attacked , probably killed each time I stepped out of my house, yet I refused to tell my parents because it felt less manly to run to mummy and daddy for protection over an issue with a fellow man.

One day my mum called and begged me to open up to her what was happening. I told her I was fine. The only person I confineded in was my elder brother, he was my only confidant, but he had to empty everything to our parents when Sabius sent him a message to me that he had assigned someone else to kill me in the next three months. Even though there has never been any murder case associated with him, yet my dad reported it to the police, as usual Sabinus ROCKED SLAM, it wasn't new to him, him na OG for cell, uncountable times Presido.

Chapter 2

I was safe, at least I try to make myself believe with the incarceration of Sabinus. Although I still wondered if he actually sent an assassin after me. My life after Sabinus' saga was a shadow of itself, if his agenda was to Bleep me up psychologically, he was succeeding.

I went for evening service one Thursday evening, as was our family tradition to be in church three times every week; Sunday normal service , midweek service on Wednesday's and Thursday prayer meetings. My mum was an ardent usher in church and so made sure we graced the front seat with our dad at each service day.

On this day, while the service was going on, I excused myself to visit the restroom, but my mission was to meet up with my cousin who is known to loiter outside with some "good for nothing touts!" My dad often described them.

There he was standing with four of his aforementioned company laughing and discussing while sermon was on going.

"Hey Jew man" He called me the name they often called one in no gang. "abeg go back inside oh, I no fit for your mama shouts" he said sitting on the church short fence.

I ignored is mockery and shook hands with him and his friends.

"I hear watin your popsi do Sabinus " Jude, one of the guys with my cousin said.

"Oh boy! That guy na devil. I don tell this animal make he join us so he go man up he still dey jonz! " my cousin uttered.

While I was yet to speak, a beautiful dark skin girl, covering her hair with a scalf and putting on a fitted knee level flower gown that elaborated her curves walked up to my cousin, she was so fine I found myself struggling with confidence. She greeted us and said to my cousin in an angelic voice, "Dan, you remember say na today you promise to give me the money wey you sign for our welfare fund raise?"

"Ruth, I no get money oh. The runs wey I be do no pay, but next week I go do something " Dan replied apologetically.

She frowned and said "But na so you dey talk".

Then she turned to me with a beautiful smile exposing her gap teeth. "Bros. Sign for me naa"

Everyone exploded in a mockery laughter leaving me completely unsettled, but she seemed not to care about their nuisance rather she handed me a pen and a green card that had different names and signatures tied to different categories of funds.

I took the card, wrote my name and signed for one thousand naira, then handed it back to her. She smiled wholeheartedly and her eyes almost popped out of the socket when she saw the amount I filled in, no one in the category exceeded two hundred naira. Why I did i do it, i had not a single clue, where was I going to get one thousand naira? I had no idea, but if felt good.

She hugged me and walked away.

"Office!" Dan said after she walked out of hearing range.

I turned my attention from her two round buttocks that bounced uncontrollably underneath her gown to my cousin. "How?" I asked, completely lost.

"You don turn office my guy, she no dey give church that money, she don use your head. I don tell her say make she come my house come collect the money..."

Ibrahim interrupted with a smile "bad guy"

Dan grinned and continued "That girl ripe no be small, I wonder who dey chop that kpomo"

"Na one Bros for Aza street, the Bros Sabi catch them young" Jude, a slim tall dark guy from the crew said.

I spotted my mum staring at me with an angry face from the church window, I quickly excused myself and went back into the church ignoring their laughter.

I am that shy guy that run away from girls. I was in SS2 at the time. In my class we were about 12 girls and 7 boys, most of my classmates had already lost their virginity in JSS3, yet in SS2 preparing for WAEC I couldn't look a woman in the face. Although I never made this known due to the scorn attached to being called a virgin, I used to brag of my escapades with women and how I positioned them in different styles, experience gotten from pornography. To crown the matter worse, even Obinna, the smallest guy in my class had had his fill with a pretty SS3 girl even in the school rest room; that, everyone knew except the school authorities.

I had a friend then Victor, he was so pornography obsessed. He brought nude magazines to school and when he eventually got a phone, you would see all the boys gathered around his desk, most had a protruding rod underneath their blue trousers. What were we watching? Porn.

One time our maths teacher snuck up from behind us, due to how immense we were in the movie, we never knew how long he stood behind us and cleared his throat thrice, yes I heard it but thought it was one of us, until he slapped one of my classmates on the back and snatched the phone from Victor that we knew we were in deep shit. After kneeling in the staff room all through the period after recess, we collected enough strokes on the assembly ground by our principal in front of the whole school, what an humiliating experience.

Two days after my encounter with Ruth in church, I was going to run an errand for my dad, he gave me three thousand naira to go get groceries from a super market across the road from my street. I was picking some of the items when a female voice called my name.

"Ikenna".

I turned and behold it was Ruth and her friend, a beautiful voluptuous light skin girl. Both of them were looking outrightly seductive, especially her friend whose chubby well curved body protruded from her short body con gown.

"Hi" I greeted trying very hard not to blush.

She smiled and held my arm and leaned on my chest like a girl holding someone she's in love with. I felt my whole nerves standing, my penis is an idiot, it just started misbehaving immediately.

"Buy something for us naa" she said in an irresistible voice looking into my face with so much charm.

I couldn't help it, I couldn't bring myself to say no, I couldn't let her know I wasn't a big boy, so I smiled foolishly and asked her to pick anything within the neighborhood of one thousand naira. Why didn't I say five hundred naira at least, but I stupidly said one thousand naira.

Trust the babe naa, she hurriedly picked one expensive cookie and fruit juice, then she turned to me and said "It looks like these things are one thousand five hundred naira, should I drop one?".

She gave me that look i couldn't resist, and her friend... oh my god, what a set up, how does she even do it? I ended up saying."It's okay, take it I'll pay" at least I still got some left over cash, that I was stupidly thanking god for

I took one thousand five hunded from the money my dad gave me and handed it to her. I was beginning to sweat profusely while smiling like a big fool. She hugged me and went to the counter to pay.

I was still thinking of how I was going to die when I get home, this wicked girl came to me again and asked "what about the money you signed?"

This time I wanted to say I will give her when we see in church, but my stupid pride forced me to deep my had in my pocket and handed her one thousand naira. She hugged me happily and gave me a peck on my right cheek, then looked into my eyes in a seductive way, I had to look away in shyness. Her friend robbed my arm and winked at me. I was feeling my penis kicking again, two gorgeous beings flirting with me simultaneously, it was too much for me to handle. I ended up dashing her friend the last five hundred naira with me, she hugged me tight, I felt her two plump boobs pressing hard against my chest. I knew she felt my erection so I excused myself and told them I wanted to continue with my shopping using the basket to cover the protrusion in my pant.

"Don't worry let's wait for you" Ruth said excitedly. She doesn't know I had no money left on me, if I allowed her stay she was going to spoil everything, I immediately protested.

"Please don't worry, I often feel somehow when people see the things I buy. Maybe next time"

Ruth wanted to hesitate, but her friend quickly held her hand "make we dey go abeg" then she turned to me and said "Thank you Ikenna "

I nodded while dashing the fakest smile that was too obvious. Ruth waved me goodbye and they left with their wahala.

After they had gone, it was dawn on me "I am dead!" The only lie I could think of was that I lost the money.

I got home and started a whole episode of super story of how I got to the shop and couldn't find the money, how I searched everywhere but couldn't find it, I was looking so apologetic and pathetic. As usual, punitive measures was carried out on me. No dinner for one week to cover the money I lost.

I was in school the next day feeling used by those witches. Yet I liked how they flirted with me and needed to see them again.

"Guy, how far?" Victor greeted me from behind and sat on my desk. "E get where I want make we go after school. Oh boy you go see yansh! Different types of yansh full everywhere. Just five hundred naira you don knack"

This caught my attention big time. "Where be this place?" I asked enthusiastically.

"No worry, after school ". He said and patted my shoulder as our biology teacher Miss Grace walked in.

Miss Grace was a stout, chocolate skin lady in her mid thirties. She has a very big back side.I often imagined her sitting on my face, or doing nasty things to that ass of hers. I often get lost in fantasy of her, especially when she was putting on those gowns that reveals the strings of her thong. I wasn't the only one, Mr Kunle, our maths teacher also had interest in her.

Whenever she was writing on the black board I often stroke my penis underneath my desk thinking of 1000 ways to please that ass. No wonder I never did well in biology.

After school, I hurriedly went home, stole one thousand naira from my mother's purse and meet up with Victor. We took fifty naira bus to the place. We arrived there at about 7pm, and behold all he said was true, yansh everywhere

I was nervous,

Chapter 3

I was hauled onto the back of a white helux along with half naked girls and degenerate men. We all sat like some condemned criminals with two police men sitting opposite each other and AK 47 in hands, they were the only ones not sitting on the floor.

I was hiding my face even though it was night. I had wondered where Victor was, he wasn't among the arrested. Could he had escaped? My heart continued to pound and my stomach rumbling, my parents are going to look for me, how would they feel when they find out where I was arrested. I was scared and worried sick.

We got to the station and made to write statement. I wondered why they did not notice I was a minor, although I looked 19 rather than 17 that I was.

It got to my turn to put down my statement, I was going to write my own side of the story which was simple; I came to get a bottle of beer not knowing it was a pleasure house, but before I could pen down a word, the officer opposite me said:

"Write...'I was caught with a prostitute' "

I turned to him surprised, what the Bleep was he saying? He repeated himself and added:

"If you don't write it you won't be allowed to call your people, you will remain here for one week"

"But I only went to get a drink" I said trying to exonerate myself from his assumption.

He gloat "After drinking what happens? " The two officers standing on his both sides idling watching us laughed out.

"You want make your people get high BP? Better do watin he talk because na toto you go find for there, we all know" The officer by his left spat.

I thought of what they said and became worried that my parents will get so worried, I was considering complying, it will only bring me shame but will save my family the trauma of worrying about me.

I heaved heavily and wanted to write it, a gentle mature voice by my right said:

"Boy, don't listen to them, write what happened, if they deny you a call report them to your lawyer, if you don't have, I will share mine"

I took a better look at the dark average height man I once considered a worn out old fool suddenly turned to a literal enlightened being. He was poise and smart looking, although his long sleeve top had rumpled, yet one could see that it was a good quality material, he had no reading glasses on, but the lines by the side of his face were so evident. What the Bleep was he doing there? I was still wondering when I was called aback by the officer in front of me referring to the man.

"Something dey worry you abi? Oga you better face front before I throw you for cell D".Then he turned to face me "if you like listen to him, I will not repeat myself"

I was confused and so hesitated.

"Write something commot for here! " The officer in front of me yelled and slammed his hand on the table. I jumped in shock and immediately penned down all has been put in my mouth.

After the preliminary documentation, we were asked to call members of our families notify them of where we are. I had no phone and my elder brother too had none, to bring myself to call my parents seemed like a battle field of decision making.

I was yet to makeup my mind when we were asked go into the cell. Most of the people protested arguing that they hadn't stolen or committed any grievous crime to sleep in the cell, yet they forced everyone into the cell.

After taking off my clothes save my boxer, I and three other guys entered the second cell and we stood with our backs on the bar gate as a police officer who ushered us in closed it. They were lots of moist clustered bodies excited to have us in. They pulled us into their midst and were forced to sit on the floor.

"Watin bring una here? "A very light skinny guy in his early twenties asked in a commanding tone.

I and the three other guys could not bring ourselves to say what happened. It was too demeaning.

"I dey speak French?" The skinny guy asked the faces around him and they all echoed.

"You dey speak French for their ear"

Then he pointed at me and asked in a curious tone, "You!" I startlingly looked up. "Watin una do?"

I was going to start explaining myself when a familiar voice called from behind him "Watin dey happen there?"

The skinny guy turned and answered "Na all these new fish dey say I dey speak French oh"

"Bring them come here!" The voice commanded .

I looked at the direction the voice was coming from and couldn't make out who he was. But as soon as they all gave way for us to pass... your guess is good as mine, it was Sabinus sitting on sweaty guy's back. My heart ran into my stomach I almost vomited.

"Presido dey call una, una deaf!" The skinny guy barked,

I hid my face as we all stood up and walked towards the skinny dark guy with thick scar across his forehead, eyes bulging from its socket, his unkempt hair he considered his style sold out his true personality. The brown boxers on his waist was turning black from dirt and his big lower lips had turned black from too much weed smoking.

I tried to stay behind so I wouldn't be spotted earlier just to save myself a little time, but I kept feeling hands pushing me to the front as though they knew Sabinus would be interested in seeing me.

I was now standing face to face with my nightmare. I could see the surprised look on his face when he saw me. That moment the fear that was drumming in my heart had taken to enjoying itself that it knocked me into being woozy and eventually I passed out, only for me to wake at the counter with some police men around me, and a woman in native top and wrapper in her early fifties fanning me.

I was taken to an empty room after I gained consciousness and was asked to lie on a bench. Later, an officer came in requesting for the phone numbers of anyone I know, that was when I wholeheartedly called out my mother's number, it was better to face my parents than to face Sabinus in a den he was the king.

Few minutes later I head my mother's voice calling out my name and yelling on top of her voice "what did he do, what has my son done?!"

I was so relieved and happy, I was praying hard that they bailed me, I never wanted to enter that cell ever again.

Few minutes later, I was called out and stood behind the counter looking at my parents like a sorry puppy. Mum's eyes were blazing with anger, dad refused to make eye contact, he was so calm as he spoke with an officer.

Moments later I was in the back sit of his Toyota Corolla heading home. Mum was yelling on top of her voice all through our way home, dad remained silent with his attention on the road. I wasn't bothered about mum, she will shout and that's where it ends, but dad, especially when he's silent. Fear that man.

We got home and he allowed me go shower, eat and go to bed. At about 4 am when sleep was beginning to sweet me, I felt a gentle tap on my arm, I opened my eyes and saw the massive man that gave birth to me staring down at me with mob stick in his hand. There was no way I could withstand him in any way. I knew my drilling is near, I quickly tried to explain what happened but he didn't give me the chance, he broke the stick on my body and continued with slaps. Mum was the one who rescued me from his intention to slap me to death, it felt like he meant to keep slapping all day long.

Later that afternoon, on my way to Uzo's house even know I was grounded never to go anywhere aside school, church or to run errands, I thought I will be able to return before mum or dad comes back from work. I saw Sabinus buying roasted yam by the road side. He saw me first and called me over. I wanted to ignore him but somehow I was standing beside him feeling my feet unbalanced on the ground. How did he get out that soon?

"You go eat yam?" He asked without looking at me.

"No" I replied.

"Okay, pay for my yam" He said and then asked the lady selling to add the biggest head of fish.

I still had the one thousand naira I stole from mum's purse, without hesitation I asked the seller how much.

"Seven-fifty" She said as she turned the fish on the grill.

I dipped my hand in my pocket and handed her the one thousand naira note. She was about giving me my balance, Sabinus quickly took it from her and walked away without even taken a glance at me. It didn't end there, I became his ATM machine and that made me to steal from my parents. I started avoiding the paths he usually follows and any other spot he usually hangs around, he kind of discovered my gimmicks and so started waiting for me in front of my school gate, and this made me started skipping school. I will hide somewhere in the house and after everyone had gone was I will come out and patrolled idly in the flat.

This continued for awhile and I was growing thin. I had to confined in my elder brother who follows dad to the shop after his WAEC while he waited for admission into the university.

His face was expressionless after I was done narrating my ordeal. He finally heaved and became thoughtful, I waited impatiently for him to say something. He heaved again, looked me in the eyes and said.

"I go need to talk to Smarto".

Smarto was what we used to call area boy then. He was a member of a deadly gang and my elder brother was fund of buying him drinks whenever they meet in the bar. I guess that was how my brother paid for his pass.

I considered it, it wasn't a great idea, Smarto is known to wreck havoc whenever he is out for someone. Rumour has it that he has killed more than twenty members of other rivalry gang. Yet he walked freely, although in company of at least five fierce looking guys.

"No. Smarto go want commitment oh"

"You go like tell daddy?"

The idea of running to dad again didn't sound manly.

"Abeg, make we leave Smarto out of this" I pleaded.

That same week Friday night, my brother took excuse that he was going for a vigil in another church. He was a great keyboardist and so may churches sought his services and the pay wasn't bad too.

He returned early the next day and went straight to bed. Because we slept on the same bed I noticed blood stain on the back of his T shirt. I asked what happened, he only said "nothing " and covered himself with the bedsheets.

I observed how he walked throughout that day and knew everything wasn't okay with him, but he kept saying he was fine.

Three days after, Sabinus took the Rolex watch my aunt who returned from the US got me after I couldn't give him the five hundred naira he requested to buy smoke. I had told my elder brother about it the night it happened. To my surprise my brother returned with the watch and handed it to me the evening of the next day. He refused to say anything about it and Sabinus never bothered me again after that day.

Until I started hearing that of him being spotted with some members of Smarto's gang that my suspicion started adding up. Well, that was the beginning of his wahala.

Although I never made this known due to the scorn attached to being called a virgin, I used to brag of my escapades with women and how I positioned them in different positions, experience gotten from pornography. To crown the matter worse, even Obinna, the smallest guy in my class had had his fill with a pretty SS3 girl even in the school rest room, that everyone knew except the school authorities.

Both of them were looking outright seductive, especially her friend whose chubby well curved body protruded from her short body con gown.

Trust the babe naa, she hurriedly picked some expensive cookies and fruit juice, then she turned to me and said "It looks like these things are one thousand five hundred naira, should I drop some?".

She gave me that look i couldn't resist, and her friend... oh my god, what a set up, how does she even do it? I ended up saying."It's okay, take it I'll pay" at least I still got some left over, that I was stupidly thanking god for.

I got home and started a whole episode of super story on how I got to the shop and couldn't find the money, how I searched everywhere but couldn't find it, I was looking so apologetic and pathetic.

Just five hundred naira you don Bleep"

This caught my attention big time. "Where be this place?" I asked enthusiastically.

"No worry, after school ". He said and patted my shoulder as our biology teacher Miss Grace walked in.

Miss Grace was a stout, chocolate skin lady in her mid thirties. She has a very big back side I often imagined her sitting on my face, or doing nasty things to that ass of hers.

After school, I hurriedly went home, stole one thousand naira from my mother's purse and met up with Victor. We took fifty naira bus to the place. We arrived there at about 7pm, and behold all he said was true, yansh everywhere.

I was nervous, looking at all these fine ladies in extremely exposing outfit standing randomly at the place gave me a very hard erection.

We took a sit in the bar and Victor ordered two bottles of small stouts. While I sipped from my glass I got my gaze fixated on any ass that walked pass.

"Boy, pick one wey you like, me once I finish this drink now, I go carry that one" Victor pointed at a mature chubby and tall lady with massive backside and big tummy, putting on a spaghetti top and denim bum short standing in front of a room adjacent us. She had her face covered in cheap makeup and was chewing gum ridiculously.

I swallowed hard thinking of who to pick, I was confused and nervous, they were everywhere, I only had to pick.

Victor quickly gulped his last glass and walked up to the lady. I watched as they discussed briskly and he followed the giant of a woman that made him look tiny into the room behind her.

I looked for one I could go in with, then my gaze fell on a lady with my biology teacher's features, she was putting on a netted black transparent jump suit, no brassiere, her big boobs where all evident, and her g-string cut in between her big back side bouncing at each step she took made my heart beat like a Ferrari exceeding speed limit. I swallowed hard and was gathering courage to talk to her when suddenly there was a rush, people were running into the corridor where they had rooms facing each other. I looked around confused. Before I could make out what was going on, three men in police uniform had stormed the parlor. I almost peed in my pant as they started making arrest.

Chapter 4

My brother was a shadow of himself, he was always looking over his shoulder.

Dad started complaining of missing money and the kind of "good for nothing rascals" that come looking for him in the shop.
The reccurring event of abnormality in my brother's behaviour made dad called for a family meeting.
I, my brother and our parents sat in the living room silently waiting for dad to begin, but his attention was on the eight o'clock news. We had no choice but to watch the news in silence.
After the news, he was lost in deep thought as though adding up the right words to begin with while we waited for nearly 5 minutes in silence, until mum interrupted the silence,
"my husband, let us get over what you have called here for, I need to finish preparing dinner"
Dad turned to my mum and said in a low sad tune that almost broke my heart,
"Your son has joined cult"
Mum was startled, she looked at both I and my brother and turned to dad in disbelief. "My children cannot do such!"
Dad scuffed sadly and turned to my elder brother "This one here, this good for nothing ingrate, this animal that want to distroy the good life we are planning for him has been stealing my money in the shop and giving it to those hooligans loitering joblessly in the street. He did not see boys brigade or boys scout to join it is some stupid low life gang!"
Mum was taken aback by dad's statement, she placed her hands on her chest and what escaped her lips was "Chimo!" Then she turned to my brother, looking at him as though trying to recognize who he was. "My son, is it true?"
"Look at guilt written all over that stupid face of his. These boys think I am old school; I don't know anything, they don't know that before boys were men" Dad boasted.
The rest of the evening was about my brother,my parents later decided he would school in Ghana to avoid story that touches the heart, but while he was yet to gain admission,he was going to leave town and stay with my uncle in Asaba.
Two days after, a member of another gang shot and killed one of Smarto's men over girl.
It was gathered that the girl was dating a member of the other gang, Larry, and a member of Smarto's gang, Jango, kept harrassing her for sex, when she couldn't take it anymore, she reported Jango to her boyfriend who immediately went to confront Jango about it at a joint where he was with two other gang members smoking and drinking local gin. The altercation only resulted to Larry being beaten up; they broke bottles on his head and left him with several bottle stabs, he narrowly escaped alive.
While the group was celebrating their victory with weed and local gin, Larry came back on a bike with a locally made pistol still covered in blood stains, he pulled over in front of the joint, pulled out a locally made short barrel gun from a bag hunged around his neck with one hand while holding the bike with the other, before Jango could gather is thought, Larry shot Jango right in the face, scattering his face and opening his skul. Others with Jango took to thier heels and the bike zoomed off.
Later that night, Smarto went to Larry's house, but instead found his cousin, they bathed him with gunshots, and went to two other member's house, dragged them into their van and took them to a bush where they made video of how they naked and beheaded them. The next day their heads were hunged on a pole in front of a government secondary school.
My area haboured over 40% of Smarto's gang making it a targeted zone. My brother got wind of the ordeal late the next day because dad took his phone and placed him on house arrest until he leaves for Asaba which was suppose to be in four days time.
That night, at about 1 AM, there was a shout in a compound five buildings away from ours with dogs barking, then gunshots followed. I and my brother were peeping through the window oberving what was happening, it was dark, there was no power, we couldn't make out anything just darkness.
"What are you people doing there? Go inside!" Dad's low yell startled us.
We slowly went and stood at the door watching as our dad put off his torch light and peeped through the window in boxers.
Mum appeared from behind with her wrapper tied around her chest, we moved away for her to pass. She looked at us, I couldnt make out the expression on her face because it was too dark to see. She then turned to dad and slowly moved towards him.
"Woman, where are you going to? Go inside!" Dad lowered his voice as he yelled at her.
There were sounds foot steps of group of persons running pass our street. Dad quickly closed the curtain and peeped through a small gap inbetween.
"Smarto! We don show!!! Everybody go collect!" A voice shouted, then a loud gun shot was fired and a red fire smarkle distrupted the darkness, causing dogs to bark even more. This was happening in front of my gate.
"Don't worry, nobody knows I am a member yet" My brother said in a shaky tone, he sounded unsure of himself, but I knew he only wanted to calm me down, for we both know he was already marked.
Then something happened, a bang on our gate, I heard sound of foot steps landing inside our compound. Dad was already on a call with the police and mum was walking about frightfully unsettled. I feared the end was near for either of us.
