In what many regards as election meddling, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has warned Italy of dire consequences if it votes for non-EU-favored parties. “If things go in a difficult direction, I’ve spoken about Hungary and Poland, we have tools,” she said.
The EU's veiled threat to voters comes as Italians prepare to elect its first female Prime Minister.

The EU introduced financial sanctions two years ago in response to what it says amounts to the undermining of democracy in Poland and Hungary.
“The President of the European Commission suggests that if the Italians elect a government that Brussels does not like, they may have funds blocked,” Polish Deputy Justice Minister Sebastian Kaleta said on Twitter.

“Further proof that the “rule of law” is pure blackmail to impose EU, or rather German, dictates. Such is “democracy”,” he added.
Eric Mamer, the spokesman for the European Commission, told reporters in Brussels that von der Leyen had not been looking to interfere in Italian politics.

“She was stressing the role of the Commission as guardian of the (European) treaties with regard to the rule of law,” he said on Friday.

Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party are set to gain 26.4% of the vote, according to an exit poll late Sunday night. The party is in a broad right-wing coalition with Lega, under Matteo Salvini, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and a more minor coalition partner, Noi Moderati.

This alliance is set to win 44% of the vote, according to exit polls, enough to gain a parliamentary majority with the center-left bloc on 27.4%. Early projections from the actual election results are due Monday morning.
