Political fireworks and intense brickbats are expected to commence nationwide today as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts the ban on campaigns for the 2023 general election, seen as a three-horse presidential race.

With the development, political parties and their candidates can now begin their campaigns, canvassing for votes from the electorate, who will determine the new set of leaders for the country beginning from May 29, 2023.

Analysts say the struggling Nigeria’s economy and rising insecurity will top campaign issues for the top presidential candidates for next February’s election in an open race to replace President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the timetable by the electoral commission, campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin today, September 28, 2022, and end on February 23, 2023, while that of governorship and state Houses of Assembly will commence on October 12, 2022, and end on March 9, 2023.

The commission also warned the 18 registered political parties fielding candidates for the 2023 general election against any form of abusive language or hate speech capable of hampering the success of the elections.

It further reminded the political stakeholders that their message or slogan must not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

Also, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate ban of the use of “quasi-security outfits” like Amotekun, Ebube Agu, Hisbah or others established by various state governments and local communities operating under different nomenclatures, structures, and orientations at electioneering campaigns, saying they have no legal roles under the Electoral Act.

Although 18 political parties have fielded presidential candidates and their running mates for the 2023 presidential election, it is expected to be a three-horse race between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which has Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as candidate; Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

Also in order to promote a peaceful electioneering campaign, the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, will on Thursday meet with the presidential candidates in Abuja where they will sign a Peace Pact.

The first Peace Accord which will hold at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, is to commit all political parties, presidential candidates and their spokespersons to peaceful political campaigns and rallies devoid of violence, incitement and personal insults, but defined by issues at the heart of national development and progress.

The committee added that the second Peace Accord will come up shortly before the elections, and it is intended to commit candidates to accept the outcome of the votes as long as it is adjudged to be free, fair and credible.

In a recently released report, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) predicted that the 2023 elections will be the most challenging to conduct in Nigeria, saying the raging insecurity, INEC’s level of preparedness and conduct of presidential candidates will shape the outcome of the polls.

Okay...

So, if Peter Obi had not seen through the gross deceit and dirty internal politics of PDP, and had not moved to Labour Party, we would have been left with a bullion-van Northern slave and an institutional thief?

Everyday when I wake, I feel very invigorated knowing that Peter Obi is not only in this race, but has also become the choice of sane Nigerians.

Can you imagine having Tinubu the drug-pushing man as your president without vomiting? I can't.
