An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a small, independent dwelling located on the same lot as a detached (i.e., detached) single-family home. ADUs have many names in the United States, including tiny apartments, sub-apartments, and granny flats. ADUs can be parts of existing homes (i.e., indoor ADUs), new or additions to existing homes (i.e., attached ADUs), or new stand-alone accessory buildings or altered portions of existing enclosed materials (i.e., held ADUs). )

Indoor, attached, and detached ADUs can improve housing affordability (for homeowners and renters), create more community living options, allow seniors to stay close to family as they age, and facilitate better use of existing resources.
