thats just dumb. The nigerian constitution does not grant immunity to any place. It only grants immunity to people.

Its silly to try and create a refuge for criminals in a place of worship.

That law will only last 10 seconds if anyone commits any serious crime.

Rob a house and run into church, I support the police gunning down such a fella on the aisle if necessary.

Pure BS.

Not right at all.

I'm suspecting some pastors in the East who fund armed robbery lobbied the govt to make this a law.

This law need to be contained in that area.

If a pastor is permitted to perform the laying on of hands on the Golden Globes, and boning of young maidens in the church vestibule in Jeeesus name, and under the pretext of "healing" their sinful souls, then it is only fair that armed robbery gang members, kidnappers and cannibals should enjoy similar immunity privileges, whenever it becomes necessary for them to flee justice by "emigrating" to the Lord's House.

Applying this God-fearing initiative further with respect to Nigerians in general, I move that simply invoking the name of the nearest church, mosque or traditional animist sacrificial shrine should henceforth be legally recognized as formal MODALITIES by which apprehended criminals of all stripes can attain the status of "expatriate" law breakers that are by definition above the law.

I totally support it
The law may seem dumb just reading it here, -but trust me, if you have ever spent a night in police cell for a crime you did not commit then u will understand the need for this protection
The fact is that our police usually have little or no training, coupled with the fact that they dont need any form of warrant to arrest or detain any person (an initiative borrowed from our dictatorship govt), it's obvious that the common man is prone to being humiliated and abused both psychologically and physically.
The nigerian police has no sense of procedure. And what is worse is that our judicial system is often too lax to tackle the problems. We often forget that our constitution declares all persons innocent until proven otherwise.
For instance, even look at the mere mention of this law, most of the posters have already assumed that the person fleeing is guilty. We seem to forget the incessant police extra judicial killings that are being reported in the news everyday.
If u have ever been humiliated by the police at any checkpoint, then you will understand the need to at least have some form of protection!

In America, the immigration service are not permitted to raid a catholic church. Once an illegal immigrant takes sanctuary in the church, they back off and can only be removed from the church under special circumstances which may involve the Vatican. That is why many illegals take sanctuary in the catholic church under duress. So, what's the big deal here?.

The big deal is "criminal" is a wide description. What class of criminals will this law protect? I don't think illegal immigrants are in the same class as armed robbers or serial killers, or are they?

This is the law to protect the criminals, what about the law to protect the law abiding citizens from the criminals? just asking

People, read the Original Post again, haaaa! The author of the article used the statement about religious centers as temporary sanctuary to introduce his article. The point was that the Courts are the sanctuary of anyone who thinks his fundamental rights have been breached or likely to be breached. There is no provision under Nigerian Law for religious places to be a sanctuary for fleeing suspected criminals.

It's only in Nigeria that this can happen. When Allied Forces unquestionably bombed mosques where Al-Qaeda members in Iraq, Afganaistan and Pakistan were hiding; when Catholic Priests who, for example, committed sexual offences have been arrested right there within church premises in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, to mention a few, suspected criminals can avoid arrest by running into churches. Any wonder these churches are, in places, den of robbers. Any wonder the bible reportedly noted that Jesus (as an agnostic, I don't believe him) said --with respect to the Jerusalem Temple -- 'My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it a `den of robbers'?

Run into a mosque and you become untouchable.

@Post

I'd be scared to go to church, even on Sundays.
