The weekly Monday sit-at-home continued in major cities of Anambra State such as Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, and some parts of Awka, as shops, markets, courts, schools, banks, and motor parks, among others remained shut.

Although tricycles and a few commercial buses plied some of the roads, they did without the usual number of passengers.

However, improved movements were recorded from 4pm as residents came out from their homes to attend town union, club meetings and other social engagements, which the exercise had lately been noted for.

Some of the residents called for the urgent release of the detained pro-Biafra leader, Mazi Kanu, particularly based on health grounds.

Also in calling for Kanu’s urgent release, a pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Imeobi Igbo Forum, advised the Federal Government not to ignore calls for Kanu’s release based on the health challenges he allegedly developed inside the Department of State Services’ facility.

The group’s National Chairman, Dr Mike Ikegulu, who spoke on Monday, called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to be magnanimous in releasing Kanu.

He said, “On this fourth day of October being another court outing for Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal Government should release him urgently because of his health condition.

“Death of MNK in detention cannot be imagined. All well-meaning organisations have called for his freedom. The United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention capped it all up with her six-month time framed demand for immediate freedom of Kanu with adequate compensation.

“Therefore, the President should ignore the war mongers around him to be magnanimous and by freeing Kanu without further delay because delay, they say, is dangerous.”
