Atikaf is spending any amount of time in the masjid, how ever long or short it is.

Every action begins with intention.

A woman is the anchor of the family.

If she goes to stay in the mosque, what happens to the more noble role in the family as a mother to nurture, etc?

You cant neglect the greater role and observe the smaller or not as great a role. a person who is not making salah does not have saum, because salah is the one to be checked first.

the role in the house, within the family will be greater for a muslima. even a muslim man will not go to hell [inchaAllah] for not making atikaf in the mosque.

the woman can go for a short time during the day assuming that the children and others roles are not forsaken for this. But to stay in masjid overnight, while the house is abandoned that can actually invite disasters, or leave the children without the nurturing quality of the mother, etc is unacceptable, since she can actually make all of her prayers, except Jumu'ah and Id prayers at home and she will have full rewards {inchaAllah].

^^^Haba! Na wa o. The OP asked about women generally and did not specify married women. Your answer is rather narrow.

What about yet-to-be-married women, divorcees, widows? How about a couple who want to do the itikaf together, leaving their kids with perhaps grandma, or couples who are yet to have kids and the husband feels it's ok for him and his wife to go for itikaf? What of a woman whose children are all grown up and the husband is probably on a journey and she feels rather than just stay at home, she should go for itikaf? And other such cases.

I think Sweetnecta view were very narrow Itikaf is permitted for every  Muslim women unless she is  on her period
The Prophet went into Itikaf and every time some of his wives joined Him
So it is surprising  to see a devout Muslim trying to discourage Muslim women from  doing what is Sunnah

My answer is Islam does not favor women but instead oppresses them.

you should be careful of giving verdicts on Islamic affairs based on your own perspective.

Narrated 'Aisha(the wife of the prophet)- The prophet used to practice Itikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice Itikaf after him.

sahih Bukhari, volume3, book 33, number 243.
