•Candidates battling with litigations omitted

By Okodili Ndidi,

Seventeen of the 28 governors in the states where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct governorship election on March 11 next year will be battling to ensure victory for their successors.

Yesterday’s publication of the final list of candidates for state elections by INEC drew the battle line between the governors who are serving out their constitutional eight years of two-term tenure on May 29, 2023 and other candidates.

According to list published by the electoral umpire, 18 political parties will be fielding 837 candidates for the 28 governors’ offices and 10,231 would be seeking elections into 993 Assembly seats in 36 states.

The names of candidates with pending court cases were missing on commission’s final list.

The outgoing governors include: Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Ben Ayade (Cross River); Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta); Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu); Dave Umahi (Ebonyi); Aminu Masari (Katsina); Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna).

Others are: Umar Ganduje (Kano); Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger); Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa); Dairus Ishaku (Taraba); Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) Simon Lalong (Plateau).

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Seyi Makinde are seeking re-election in Lagos and Oyo states respectively. They are among the 11 incumbent states’ executives.

The others are: Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa); Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Babagana Zulum (Borno); Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe); AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa); Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Bello Matawalle (Zamfara).

Keen contests are expected in states where outgoing governors had running battles with their political god-fathers in picking candidates for their battles.

Notable among the states is Delta where Okowa disagreed with James Ibori on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket. The governor preferred choice is Sheriff Oborevwori.

Governors Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu also ruffled feathers in Enugu and Abia to secure tickets for their favourites.

In Lagos, 14 candidates will be slugging it out with Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Makinde will contend with 15 challengers to renew his tenancy for another four years at Agodi Oyo State Governor’s House.

Governor Abiodun will be in the race for the Oke-Mosan Government Office, Abeokuta with 12 challengers.

Sixteen greenhorns will battle for votes in Rivers to succeed Wike and in Kwara, incumbent AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq will slug it out with 14 contenders, including a 74-year-old professor.

In Jigawa, Sule Lamido’s son and nine others have been cleared by INEC.

Truthfully it’s a battle.

For us, we only need quality leadership. We need better societies and better standards of living for all our people.

The new Electoral Law 2022, has empowered unpopular parties to present credible candidates on the Ballot for the electorates to choose from.

In Akwa Ibom State for instance,

Two top rival political party (PDP&APC):

PDP has Pastor Umo Eno, Gov. Udom Emmanuel prefferred candidate is having a court case bordering on Certificate forgery, instituted by a more credible&amiable Governorship Aspirant, Mr. Akan Okon, Pastor Eno may not likely win the court case, considering the weighty allegations hanging on his neck, that he hasn't been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt till this moment, awaiting Federal High Court Judgement.

APC has Mr. Akan Udofia as candidate, a Billionaire Businessman, he is having litigations on the ticket, the nomination process that led to his emergence is heavily under scrutiny, but likely to scale through if the plaintiffs can settled out of court to allow peace reign.

Unpopular Political Parties(YPP&NNPP) but gaining Popularity on a daily basis in the State with its Activities.
The above Parties are the alternative parties, Akwa Ibom people are looking forward to.

Young Progressives Party (YPP) has Senator Bassey Albert Akpan on the Ballot, currently The Chairman, Senate committee on Petroleum (Upstream), OBA as he is fondly called, Political juggernaut left with more than half of the state PDP Structures to the new found love, YPP, after being schemed out of the PDP Guber primaries using ad-hoc delegates whom he wasn't allowed to have access to by the State PDP led by the Chairman & Governor.
His defection to YPP has left PDP depleted, so many aggrieved also left with him to YPP, giving PDP leadership in the State a lot to think about, traumatized on a daily basis, infact the Reconciliation committee set up by the State PDP leadership did not yielded any tangible results as more are defecting on a daily basis, more defections are expected by December & January next year before elections.

Majority of the people in the State, strategic but aggrieved &factional PDP members Loyal to the Senator &especially the Youths of the state are already falling in love with YPP &its Service To The People mantra & #BallotRevolution iconic message as a good alternative platform, having known the Candidate, Senator OBA for many years, as a man with Capacity & good antecedents, Senator OBA has recently been nominated for a National Honour in the category of (CON) based on his contributions in the Oil&Gas Industry, the PIB etc, having served as Chairman, Senate committee on Gas Development in the 8th Assembly.

New Nigeria People's Party(NNPP) has Senator John Udoedeghe on the Ballot, he left the APC to actualize his Governorship ambition, just like Senator Bassey Albert OBA, he was schemed out alongside Senator Ita Enang in the APC Guber primaries to the most preferred candidate of Senator Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Akan Udofia, he left with his die-hard loyalists &supporters from APC to NNPP.

The unpopular parties are all strategizing to unsettle&uproot the PDP, which has been a stronghold in the state since 1999.

With the new electoral Law 2022, that supports the usage of some technological advancements, it's not gonna be business as usual at the polling Units across the State, next year's Guber election in Akwa Ibom State will be all about Competence, Popularity, Capacity & Street Credibility of each of the Candidates.

It is nice and welcomed development that incumbent governors are now finding it increasingly difficult to implant their rubberstamp stooges as successors. The increasing resistance means the polity is deepening some more.

You are still dreaming: wake up!
There is no Federal might come 2023 as long as Buhari is not contesting. Did the so-called federal might work out in Osun state? The Youths is taking back their country.
