Why Would You Need a NIN?

So that others can reach you, you have a phone number. To help others identify you, obtain your National Identification Number.

After you enroll, NIMC issues you a National Identification Number (NIN), a special number that serves as your permanent identification.

During verification and authentication, it is used to match you with your biometric information and other information in the National Identity Database.

You will use your NIN to open personal bank accounts, obtain your driver’s license, obtain your Permanent Voters’ Card, participate in the National Health Insurance Scheme, obtain your National e-ID card, and travel (international passport application & acquisition). The NIN is set to be used for all transactions in Nigeria requiring identity verification.

The NIN is set to be utilized for all exchanges in Nigeria requiring personality checks so you’ll involve your NIN for

Travel and getting your National e-ID card (international passport application & acquisition)
Obtaining your National e-ID card
Establishing individual bank accounts
Obtaining a driving license
Permanent Voters’ Card
Installment of your duties (Tax)
Financial operations pertaining to your contributing pension plan
Admittance to government assistance and other significant administrations from the Nigerian Government.
Exchanges with federal retirement aide suggestions
Land exchanges subject to the Land Use Act
Some other exchanges NIMC may so endorse and list in the National Government Newspaper
To ensure effective coordination of activities, NIMC is working with several agencies across Nigeria that deal with the aforementioned services to harmonize and integrate data.

How do I enroll for NIN?
NIN Enrolment involves the recording of a person’s demographic information, as well as the taking of ten (10) fingerprints, a head-to-shoulder photo, and a digital signature. These are all used to cross-check the data already present in the National Identity Database to ensure that the same information has not already been entered.

You must apply on the NIMC Pre-Enrolment Portal and follow the instructions provided therein in order to obtain a National Identification Number.
