The area of Rivers State known as Oyigbo was originally called 'Obigbo" until it was carved out of Imo State in 1976, put in Rivers State and renamed "Oyigbo" to appease Ogoni people. It is populated by Ndoki-Asa people, two sub groups of the Igbo tribe

Obigbo was in the News in October 2020, it was one of two places where the Nigerian Army went to massacre unarmed civilians during the ENDSARS protest, the other place being Lekki Tollgate

In October 2020, the ENDSARS protest that had engulfed Southern Nigeria became increasingly violent following the Lekki tollgate shootings. The authorities were clamping down on protesters, leading to violent clashes. On the 19th of October, a clash between ENDSARS protesters and the security forces at Obigbo led to Oyigbo Police Station being burnt, some properties being destroyed and lives being lost

The very next day, with no investigation whatsoever, Governor Wike of Rivers State came on air to blame IPOB for the violence, and encouraged the security forces to move into Obigbo. Wike even put a N50M bounty on the head of Stanley Mgbere, whom he accused of being the head of IPOB in Rivers State. It later turned out that Mr Mgbere was an innocent Onne activist who only led a peaceful  ENDSARS protest. At this point, nobody in Rivers State had ever complained that IPOB touched anyone

What happened next was tragedy. The Nigerian Army moved into Obigbo and started, shooting, killing and arresting people. Over 50 people were said to have been shot dead by rampaging Soldiers and over 80 injured. Hundreds of young men were arrested, tortured, detained and flown out of Rivers State to various detention centres in Nigeria, where they were held without charge. Over 50 women were abducted by Soldiers, flown to Abuja on a military aircraft, and detained at Mogadishu Barraks, Asokoro, where they were raped for weeks by Soldiers

For 4 days, the Nigerian Army laid siege on Obigbo and brought death, destruction and suffering with them
